Melbourne is Australia’s fastest growing city, and public transport is vital to keeping it moving. Since 2009, Metro has proudly operated and maintained a world-class train service and delivered major transport projects that shape the future of our city. Guided by our value of Safely Always, we are one team dedicated to ensuring everyone gets home safely while helping to connect and create a better Melbourne.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and technically strong Senior Financial Accountant to join our Finance team.

As a key member of the Financial Accounting team, you will provide expert advice and support across financial accounting, taxation, statutory reporting, audit and compliance. You will work closely with stakeholders across the business to deliver accurate and timely financial outcomes while strengthening financial governance and controls.

You will also act as a subject matter expert on accounting standards and taxation matters and provide leadership support to the Financial Accounting Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review monthly financial accounting activities, including balance sheet reconciliations, cash flow reporting and month-end processes.
  • Support the preparation of statutory financial statements and ensure compliance with Australian Accounting Standards and legislative requirements.
  • Manage taxation obligations, including BAS, payroll tax, FBT and income tax instalments.
  • Coordinate statutory and compliance audits, acting as the primary contact for external auditors and internal stakeholders.
  • Oversee key finance processes, including Delegated Financial Authority, AASB 16 lease accounting, employee entitlement accounting and treasury support
  • You will also develop and maintain effective financial controls, policies and procedures, provide technical guidance to Finance Business Partners and act as deputy to the Financial Accounting Manager when required.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • A degree qualification in Accounting, Commerce or a related discipline, together with CA, CPA or ACCA accreditation.
  • Extensive experience in financial accounting, statutory reporting, audit, taxation or a similar finance role.
  • Strong knowledge of Australian Accounting Standards, financial reporting and taxation requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience working with auditors and managing statutory and regulatory compliance obligations.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and stakeholder management capabilities, supported by excellent communication skills and attention to detail.

You will be a collaborative and trusted finance professional who can influence stakeholders, manage competing priorities and identify opportunities to improve processes and financial outcomes.

Why Apply?

  • Free Myki travel across Victoria.
  • Help keep Melbourne moving every day.
  • Access flexible working options, subject to the requirements of the role.
  • Benefit from career development, wellbeing initiatives and employee benefits.
  • Join an inclusive workplace guided by our values: Safely Always, Caring, One Team, Dependable and Make a Difference.

This is an opportunity to play an important role within a complex and dynamic organisation where you will partner with senior stakeholders and contribute to strong financial governance, compliance and informed business decision-making.

Next Steps

Applications should include an up-to-date resume and a brief cover letter outlining your relevant experience and interest in the role.

Applications for this position will close on 15th October 2026.
