About the position:

The Media and Content Manager is integral to the success of Metro’s communications function. This role will be employed as a 6-month Max Term Contract and sits within Metro’s Corporate Affairs department and has the responsibility for managing Metro's media and content functions which are underpinned by the business’s strategic objectives.

You will have the ability to proactively and reactively manage media related issues, generate positive media coverage, and deliver high quality external communications. You will also provide advice to the Executive and other stakeholders, to ensure Metro's reputation is maintained in a positive light in an issues-rich environment.

Reporting to the Head of Media and Content, the Media and Content Manager will establish and maintain partnership-style working with stakeholder media and communications representatives including The Department of Transport and Planning, the State and other operators, and agencies during an era of transformation of Melbourne’s transport network.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Participate in a media on-call roster every three weeks, including staffing the 24/7 media phone line and be available in person if required while on call
  • Manage proactive and reactive media and content to maintain Metro’s reputation in a positive light
  • Able to work under pressure with multiple priorities
  • Develop and execute the media and content strategy to support Metro’s objectives
  • Identify and proactively manage potential issues and risks in conjunction with Head of Media and Content, the Corporate Affairs team and the business
  • Work with stakeholders to identify and generate positive media stories to support Metro’s strategic objectives
  • Manage Metro’s social media calendar working with business areas within Metro to develop compelling and positive content
  • Craft media responses in cases where time is pressing, source background information through consultation with stakeholders, including executive briefings and prepare spokespeople for interviews
  • Be familiar with a high matrix style environment where appropriate sign-off is required while keeping stakeholders briefed throughout
  • Take a lead role when required in managing external communications for major incidents
  • Organise media events and opportunities
  • Provide advice to the Head, various Metro departments, Executive team and stakeholders on media issues
  • Contribute to reporting through relevant systems and suppliers
  • Develop and foster external relationships with key media and stakeholders as the Metro representation

About you and qualifications:

  • Tertiary qualification in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, or a related discipline
  • Extensive experience in a journalism, public relations, communications, or corporate affairs role
  • Proven ability to execute complex tasks to completion within tight timeframes with an eye for detail
  • Demonstrated ability to absorb complex information and re-present it simply for the public
  • Superior ability to communicate effectively, and build rapport quickly with all levels of management and key stakeholders
  • Superior skills in research, analysis, and synthesis of complex information
  • Issues/crisis management experience advantageous
  • Spokesperson experience advantageous but not essential
