Melbourne is Australia’s fastest growing city – a city that is becoming increasingly reliant on public transport networks. Since 2009, Metro proudly continues to operate and maintain a world-class train service and network through to delivering significant transport projects that will shape how Melbourne moves. With Zero Harm at the foundation of everything we do, we want everyone to get home safely. We are one team, helping to connect and shape a better Melbourne.

We’re looking for a passionate and driven People Business Partner to join our team supporting the Infrastructure division – a 1,000+ strong workforce that operates 24/7 to maintain the essential assets of Melbourne’s rail network. This includes over 1,000 kilometres of track, 40,000 structures, and critical signalling, electrical and facilities infrastructure that keep our network safe and reliable.

In this role, you’ll work closely with leaders to drive sustainable business performance through effective people partnering across a broad range of people priorities – including performance, talent, remuneration, organisational design, change management, employee engagement, inclusion, and leadership development.

This position is based in the West Melbourne/Docklands area, with time also spent at other Infrastructure depots and 700 Collins Street as part of a hybrid arrangement (3 days in the office / 2 days from home).

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Senior People Business Partner to develop and implement a People Plan aligned to business goals.
  • Provide strategic and practical support to leaders on organisational change, workforce planning, and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Support and coach leaders to build capability, lead high-performing teams, and deliver on leadership development, talent reviews, and succession planning.
  • Deliver and support the coordination of key cyclical People activities (e.g. performance and remuneration reviews, engagement surveys).
  • Contribute to the design and delivery of People-related training and development initiatives to uplift leader capability.
  • Champion a strong, inclusive, and values-led workplace culture through engagement strategies and local initiatives.
  • Build trusted relationships with business leaders, providing guidance on complex people matters and policy interpretation.
  • Assist in managing employee relations matters, including investigations, disciplinary processes, grievances, and exits – with a focus on minimising risk to Metro.

About you

  • Tertiary qualification in HR Management or a relevant field, with strong experience in a People business partnership model.
  • Well-versed in industrial awards, industrial relations, and WorkCover policies, within mid-to-large corporate matrix organizations
  • In-depth knowledge of People functions, including resourcing, talent management, change management, performance, engagement, workplace relations, remuneration, wellbeing, and diversity.
  • Proven experience in influencing senior stakeholders, leading change programs, and providing management coaching.
  • Skilled in building trusted relationships, with excellent communication, presentation, coaching, and facilitation abilities.
