The Opportunity

West Musgrave will be one of the world’s largest, lowest cost, lowest emissions copper-nickel projects.

Our West Musgrave nickel-copper project is located on Ngaanyatjarra country, in the Musgrave Province of Central Western Australia, and includes the Nebo and Babel nickel-copper deposits and the Succoth copper deposit.

West Musgrave, which has a 26-year mine life, will be an owner-operator mining operation and in addition to being powered by ~80 per cent renewable energy, the Project scope includes a pathway to net zero Scope 1 emissions by 2038.

The Project will feature an Autonomous Haulage System and remote operations from day one and our workforce will be a flexible, technology enabled team supported by remote operations to improve safety outcomes and maximise opportunities for flexible working and diverse participation.

About The Role

Location: Perth preferred

Roster: 5:2 Monday – Friday with travel to site as required. During Commissioning phase, the role will transition to be site based

The Details

Reporting to the Package Manager – Power, you will support the Project capability required to deliver the West Musgrave project through the Construction phases in support of BHP’s growth strategy.

The primary purpose of this role is to work safely and collaboratively with our Independent Power Producer (IPP) to deliver one of the world's largest off-grid hybrid power solutions and site-wide electrical network. As the Electrical Engineering discipline Subject Matter Expert (SME) you will work directly with the Engineering Manager (and team) and the other packages to ensure power distribution is designed, constructed, commissioned and handed over to operations in accordance with Australian Standards and Good Industry Practice.

You will play a key role in developing and strengthening a culture based on the West Musgrave We Care approach. We Care is a multilayered program through showing We Care at an individual (I), team (we) and community level (us). We aspire for West Musgrave to earn a reputation as a place where people thrive. You will also communicate across the whole projects group, and with external stakeholders, supporting a transparent and proactive engagement strategy.

Key Responsibilities

The Project Electrical Engineer role will focus on ensuring the West Musgrave Project is safely delivered on time and on budget. Specifically, this includes:

  • Develop the electrical components of the IPP Integration Plan to support the safe and on-time delivery of ~50MW thermal, ~50MW battery storage, ~60MW solar PV, ~90MW wind and ~40km of underground HV/LV reticulation.
  • Support the development of (and then implement) the right safety culture that ensures zero harm.
  • Collaborate with project managers and construction teams to coordinate the integration of the Power Package with other packages across West Musgrave.
  • Manage relationships with contractors and other stakeholders, ensuring their needs and concerns are addressed in a timely and professional manner.
  • Participate in budgeting, scheduling, and procurement activities, and contribute to the business planning process.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest developments in electrical safety in design, construction and commissioning for traditional and renewable energy sources, and actively seek out opportunities to incorporate these into the construction project.
  • Ensure compliance to the process and performance standards of BHP.
  • Work closely with the IPP Integration Senior Advisor to develop the electrical components of Operational Readiness for the power package.
  • Work closely with the Engineering Manager (and team) to ensure conformance with BHP engineering standards that apply at the interface from IPP to BHP.

Applicant Requirements

This role requires a self-motivated, hands on and values-based individual with a desire to deliver best practice outcomes with skills, experience, and personal attributes including:

  • A technical project electrical engineering background, comfortable working across the engineering, commissioning and handover phases of project delivery.
  • Eexperienced in the power generation and mining/resources/heavy industry sectors (desirable).
  • Strong organisational and time management qualities, the ability to multi-task, prioritise responsibilities and meet deadlines for complex projects.
  • Ability to impact and install a genuine We Care culture in the safety space.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to work effectively in a team environment with the confidence to engage and lead conversations (both internally and with the IPP).
  • Can quickly identify threats or opportunities and develop strategies to mitigate or capitalise on these.
  • A team player, supportive of team, peers, and partners.
  • Tertiary education in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Trade Certification combined with the commensurate level of real-world experience is required to be successful in this role.
