About the role
The Superintendent manages the day-to-day operational activities of the depot and terminal at Spencer Junction, to ensure the safe, efficient, on time running of services in accordance with customer contracts. In addition, oversee terminal operations in Whyalla for a critical customer to our business and the running of our remote barracks location in Cook. Working closely with their Supervisors, the Superintendent is responsible for leading, encouraging and supporting employees to meet or exceed objectives and positively adapt to change.
Leading an operational team of over 120 across 3 operational sites with 4 direct reports this position requires a high level of leadership &people management, coupled with the resilience to make decisions that balance operational effectiveness with a commitment to a positive work environment for all employees. The role requires an unwavering commitment to driving the safety culture of the organisation, negotiation, strategic focus to create & lead change and a genuine communication style to operate effectively. The Superintendent is also responsible for managing the relationship with our external provider who supports the running of our barracks location in Cook, which is essential to our operation.
The accountabilities for this role will fall within 4 key pillars, Safety, Customer, Leadership and Performance, focus including:
- Lead and champion the HSE Strategy to deliver improved safety and sustainability performance
- Build strong collaborative relationships with customers within your operational area
- Manage performance within the locations, empower your direct reports and build a positive workplace culture by role modelling our core values
- Lead, inspire and motivate staff to achieve Pacific National goals
- Drive alignment across the workforce at your locations, that is built on mutual understanding of the importance of creating & maintaining a long term sustainable operation
- Ensure the business strategy is translated into an operational business plan with clear and measurable goals that align local sites with the broader regional focus
- Identify process improvement opportunities for the relevant area and support and manage the implementation of these changes
- Manage financial and operational budgets, resources, on-time performance, and safety.
Your experience
You will be a strong communicator with demonstrated experience managing a large complex team where employee relationships are built around the additional challenge of working in a 24/7 operational environment. This role will require a leader that thrives in having full accountability, can work autonomously and with the ability to drive positive cultural change across safety and performance. As a 24/7 operation accessibility of the Superintendent is pivotal therefore flexibility with working hours is essential
In addition, you will require:
- Strong business leadership experience in rail, logistics or comparable industry
- Proven leadership skills in a complex environment – communicating vision, building team, and establishing high performance culture
- Demonstrated experienced working with and interpreting Enterprise Agreements
- Strong analytical and planning skills
- Exceptional communication and negotiation skills
- Strong people management and leadership skills
- Champion of safety culture and proven leadership in improving safety results
- Proven success in managing multiple stakeholders effectively
- Thorough understanding of customer needs
