About Port of Newcastle

Port of Newcastle is more than a port. It exists to build Australia’s prosperity with responsible, integrated and innovative supply chain solutions.

With trade worth approximately $48 billion to the national economy each year, Port of Newcastle enables Australian businesses to successfully compete in international markets.

The port has capacity to handle 10,000 ship movements and over 200 million tonnes of cargo annually. With a deepwater shipping channel operating at 50% of its capacity, significant port land available and enviable access to national rail and road infrastructure, Port of Newcastle is positioned to further underpin the future prosperity of the Hunter, NSW, and Australia.

As custodians of the region’s critical asset, Port of Newcastle is diversifying its trade as it strives to create a safe, sustainable, and environmentally and socially responsible future.

Behind every ship movement, every tonne of cargo, are the people that keep the port operating. Our people are the engine room of our port. Port of Newcastle’s values influence how we develop our strategy, how we measure performance, how we treat our colleagues and how we approach our work at PON.

The Opportunity

The Property & Compliance Function is responsible for the strategic oversight, governance and optimisation of Port of Newcastle’s (PON) property portfolio, ensuring sustainable revenue growth and compliance with all regulatory, legal and Port Lessor obligations.

As Senior Manager Property & Compliance, you will provide strategic leadership across property and compliance, setting the frameworks, standards and structures that underpin effective portfolio management and performance.

Working closely with Legal, Risk, Operations and Business Development, you will ensure property outcomes are commercially sound, compliant and aligned with PON’s long-term objectives, while partnering with the Manager Property Services to ensure strong alignment between strategy and operational delivery.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the strategic direction and governance of PON’s property portfolio

  • Oversee compliance frameworks, systems and reporting, ensuring obligations are met

  • Provide high-level advice to senior stakeholders on property, risk and compliance matters

  • Drive portfolio optimisation and commercial outcomes

  • Partner with Risk & Business Development to ensure alignment and performance

  • Ensure strong governance, risk management and compliance culture across the function

What You Bring

You bring extensive experience in strategic property portfolio management, including commercial oversight, lease governance and portfolio optimisation. You have a proven ability to lead and embed compliance frameworks, including governance structures, compliance schedules and reporting, alongside a strong understanding of regulatory, legal and planning environments, with the ability to interpret and apply complex requirements.

You demonstrate experience in risk management and assurance, with the capability to proactively identify and mitigate risks, and provide strategic, commercially focused advice to influence decision-making at a senior level.

You also bring strong capability in financial oversight, including budgeting, performance tracking and portfolio reporting, supported by excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, enabling you to build credibility and influence at all levels. Your leadership experience includes driving performance, developing capability and fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.

You are highly proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, and apply a structured, strategic and proactive approach to managing competing priorities and delivering high-quality outcomes. Experience with TechnologyOne or similar systems will be highly regarded
