The Opportunity:

As a full-time Wharf Officer, you will play a pivotal role in managing the day-to-day operational activities at Port of Newcastle within the Marine & Operations department.

Operating with minimal supervision, you will contribute strategically to various areas, including Wharf Operations Services, Policing Acts and Regulations, Launch Driving, and support in achieving the Marine & Operations team's target outcomes.

Your responsibilities will involve overseeing the safety, security, and environmental compliance of wharf activities, vessel and cargo operations, vehicular traffic, and participating in various port-related services.

This role operates on a 7-day, 24-hour rotational shift basis to maintain the Port's operational efficiency.

What you will bring:

Essential:

  • Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC), or ability to attain
  • Coxswain NC1 Certificate
  • Competency in the handling and maintenance of small vessels
  • General understanding of overall port operations
  • Demonstrated competency in the safe mooring and unmooring of commercial trading or cargo vessels
  • Effective oral communication skills and ability to write accurate reports
  • Demonstrated sound computer and administrative skills

In addition to these essential requirements, it will be advantageous to have:

  • Certificate of Local Knowledge for the Port of Newcastle
  • Experience in a maritime port environment
  • Thorough knowledge of PON's wharves and surrounding areas
  • Knowledge of Acts and Regulations pertaining to Port operations such as Dangerous Goods Regs, Marine Pollution Act and WH&S Act.
  • Previous seagoing experience
  • Understanding of Corporation's Incident Response Plan and "standing orders" for relevant Operations and Infrastructure Division function
