We are currently looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join us as a laboratory/ science technician! This role will see you take responsibility for ensuring the safe and effective storage, testing, recycling and reclamation of SF6 gas from our high voltage assets

About the role

In this dynamic and hands on role, you will:

  • Assist with process development and improvements within the recycling system.
  • Operate/maintain process equipment and gas carts used to consolidate and purify SF6 gas.
  • Test purity and dewpoint of SF6 gas from recycling activities and from SF6 gas insulated switchgear samples.
  • Maintain SF6 inventory levels to meet on demand requests for Powerlink maintenance activities.
  • Interface with customers to ensure their orders are met.
  • Maintain gas supplies delivered to the laboratory to ensure uninterrupted operation of laboratory equipment.
  • Assist with various activities to enable uninterrupted laboratory work flow.

The successful candidate will be required to operate a pedestrian fork lift (and obtain forklift licence if not already held – Powerlink will support you in gaining this), move and handle gas cylinders weighing up to 150kg and utilise liquid nitrogen.

About you

You are a natural problem solver with high mechanical aptitude, enabling you to apply various mechanical concepts in your work. You enjoy working methodically, attending to all details that may affect work output. You also have great communication skills and are able maintain co-operative and productive relationships with colleagues and customers.

You also hold the following qualification/s:

  • Qualified to a minimum diploma level (AQF Level 6) in science (chemistry or physics major), chemical or electrical engineering or a relevant trade background or Certificate in Process Plant Operations.

Ideally, you will also have:

  • Some previous experience working in a routine or production laboratory environment
  • Demonstrated skills in use of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Knowledge of analytical chemistry principles and associated instrumentation.
  • Application of measurement and calibration techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise a degree of scientific/technical knowledge to independently make informed decisions on accuracy and precision of data
