About us
As a department our purpose is to help the community to prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from the impact of fire and emergency events.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) is the primary provider of fire, rescue and emergency management programs and services throughout Queensland. The department encompasses the Fire and Rescue Service, disaster management services, the Rural Fire Service and the State Emergency Service, and also supports other volunteer groups providing emergency response to Queenslanders.

Purpose of the role
Breathing Apparatus and Hazardous Materials (BA HazMat) is responsible for the development, implementation, planning and management of BA HazMat equipment and operations within QFES and provides advice, support and emergency response services. The day to day function is to provide support to regional operations, which include but are not limited to: maintain specialised equipment to manufacturer recommendations; provide technical expertise at incidents; provide training for HazMat related courses; and ensure capability is maintained by responding to service requirements.
Reporting to the Manager, you will provide effective support to the team for the completion of maintenance work on safety equipment, and the management of logistics and stores, including cleaning and maintenance of the BA HazMat facility and equipment. You will also provide administration support and coordination of maintenance requests, ordering and receiving of good and equipment, including financial and document management, ensuring accurate records are maintained to support the functions of the business unit and meet organisational requirements.
Key requirements
Mandatory requirements
- Manual ‘C’ class drivers licence.
- Possess and provide evidence of a forklift licence. (License to perform High risk work)
Highly desirable requirements
- A Medium Rigid (MR) class drivers licence.
- Experience in preparing dangerous goods for freight.
Ability to perform general repairs and maintenance duties, lifting, climbing ladders and operating various tools and equipment to perform required tasks.
Your key accountabilities
Your part in the ongoing success of our department, in supporting frontline services will see you responsible for a variety of work, including, but not limited to:
- Undertake the ordering, receipt and dispatch of equipment, including reconciliation and payment of invoices, and ensure accurate records are maintained to support business unit activities.
- Perform general maintenance services including cleaning, minor repairs and improvements for the Specialist Response facility and equipment.
- Ensure comprehensive workplace health and safety procedures associated with an industrial environment are adhered to and meet compliance with organisational health and safety policies and procedures.
- Assist with general office duties, including filing, faxing, photocopying, incoming and outgoing mail, and the maintenance of office equipment, resources and supplies.
- Contribute to the development, implementation and review of systems, policies and procedures to ensure quality and accuracy, and support continuous improvement initiatives.
- Liaise with team members to support the work priorities, processes, procedures and operational requirements to ensure effective delivery of unit outcomes.
- Work autonomously using initiative and self-motivation to assist in efficient and effective equipment maintenance and resolve issues or provide recommendation for improvement in a timely and professional manner.
