About us
As a department our purpose is to help the community to prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from the impact of fire and emergency events.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) is the primary provider of fire, rescue and emergency management programs and services throughout Queensland. The department encompasses the Fire and Rescue Service, disaster management services, the Rural Fire Service and the State Emergency Service, and also supports other volunteer groups providing emergency response to Queenslanders.
QFES is one department with many services, many capabilities and many partners.
Purpose of the role
Media, Communications and Online is critical to managing reputational matters for the department, and is responsible for leading the functions of Media, Communications and Online teams that deliver proactive and reactive media and social media management; statewide public safety advertising campaigns, research, evaluation and executive communications; and online management and administration services of the department’s internal and external web environments that ensure the effective management of many critical risk and reputation issues at any one time for the business.
Reporting to the Executive Director, Assurance, you will be responsible for the leadership and direction through all functions of the branch, including managing human resource, financial and budget planning, program management and reporting. You will provide strategic advice and lead the development and implementation of policy, frameworks and systems to strategically manage activities and capability that supports and delivers government and departmental objectives.

- Qualifications in and relevant experience commensurate of the role, in communications, public relations or journalism within a complex and challenging environment.
Your key accountabilities
Your part in the ongoing success of our department, in supporting key frontline services will see you responsible for a variety of work, including, but not limited to:
- Lead the development and implementation of media, communications, and online frameworks to positively position the organisation in a complex and rapidly changing environment.
- Provide high-level advice to the Minister, Commissioner and Executive on strategic media, communications, and online issues and opportunities to enhance operational awareness and support decision making.
- Lead, develop and implement key public information campaigns to support community safety and continually raise the profile of the department.
- Develop and implement policy and systems to strategically manage branch activities across the department that support government and departmental objectives.
- Provide leadership to ensure the organisational media and communications capability is maintained.
- Manage, prepare and review complex reports, briefs and submissions, and ensure accurate and appropriate response to a range of communication materials and/or issues, in accordance with departmental requirements.
- Establish and maintain strategic relationships, alliances and networks with government agencies and other key stakeholders that enhance the positive image of the organisation, and deliver desired outcomes.
- Manage work planning and development, and human, financial and physical resources to ensure performance management and effective and efficient deployment of staff and resources.
