There’s No Us Without U. Care with Us, for Today and Tomorrow

There's no life without water, and at Urban Utilities, we live and breathe that knowledge every single day. It's why our people are so passionate about what they do and how they do it. And it's why we need people like YOU. Come shape our future with us and make a real and lasting impact across our teams.

Your Opportunity

We have an exciting opportunity for a Principal Engineer Process Safety to join our Engineering & Professional Services team, part of our Infrastructure Planning & Delivery Group.

Urban Utilities operates complex water and wastewater infrastructure that supports the delivery of essential services to 1.6 million customers every day, from underground pipeline networks, wastewater treatment plants and other infrastructure that enables us to deliver our core services.

As Principal Engineer Process Safety you will play a critical role in developing process safety requirements and ensuring effective implementation across Urban Utilities’ standards, procedures and systems. You will provide assurance and specialist advisory services to support our capital investment portfolio while protecting the integrity and safe operation of assets in service.

Your accountabilities will include:

  • Provide process safety engineering leadership throughout the business to assist Urban Utilities in meeting its commitments to protect people, safeguard the environment and minimising business risk.

  • Provide strategic direction to ensure hazards are identified, risk controls are defined and implemented, and process safety risks are managed so far as is reasonably practicable.

  • Lead process safety risk management across the asset lifecycle, including development, application and oversight of process hazard analysis methodologies such as HAZOP and Bowtie.

  • Develop and maintain safety assurance frameworks and plans to verify that critical risk controls are effective and sustained.

  • Provide specialist process safety guidance to senior managers and cross-functional teams to support the identification & resolution of process safety risks in a dynamic operating environment.

  • Encourage innovation in process safety through collaboration and cross-team engagement to strengthen capability and improve outcomes across the business.

About You

We are seeking candidates who are passionate about shaping the future of essential infrastructure, and who bring the following qualifications, skills, and experiences:

  • A tertiary qualification in Chemical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline, along with RPEQ registration (or eligibility to obtain registration).

  • Prior process safety engineering experience in a brownfield, operational environment within a related industrial sector such as utilities, petrochemical, energy, or mining.

  • Significant experience contributing to or leading programs that improve process safety maturity through the application of recognised process safety frameworks.

  • A strong commitment to process safety excellence, with the ability to develop and implement technical solutions through collaborative, partnership-based engagement with internal and external stakeholders.

  • String critical thinking and a growth mindset, with the resilience and perseverance to resolve complex issues and remove operational constraints.

At UU, we celebrate diversity. We genuinely believe that bringing together diversity of thoughts, perspectives and expressions is key and crucial to our success as a business. You might find you meet some, but not all, of the job requirements for this role. We’d still encourage you to apply as we we’re looking for the right human being for this role - it’s about so much more than ticking all the boxes!

Why Urban Utilities?

At Urban Utilities, the work we do is about so much more than the bottom line. We're a leading provider of world-class drinking water and wastewater services to the vibrant communities of Brisbane, Ipswich, Lockyer Valley, Somerset, and Scenic Rim. At the core of our work lies genuine care: for our team, our customers, communities, and the environment. From the flush of a toilet to major infrastructure projects and residential developments, we're dedicated to being there every step of the way.

Our HQ is in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane, but you'll find us all over SEQ - working in cool places like the SAS Laboratory in Darra, field-based depots in Eagle Farm, Acacia Ridge, Bundamba, and wastewater treatment plants dotted across the region.

We know the chance to thrive, and progress comes hand in hand with the support to balance work with life. So, you’ll access an increasingly diverse range of benefits and initiatives that’ll help you bring the best you. Speaking of which, here’s just a sample of the benefits we offer our team:

  • Generous Salary Packaging options, including novated leases

  • Corporate discounts across Health insurance, technology and more

  • 18 weeks of paid parental leave, 15 days personal leave including two proactive wellbeing days, and an additional day of leave each year to connect with friends and family
