There’s No Us Without U. Care with Us, for Today and Tomorrow

There's no life without water, and at Urban Utilities, we live and breathe that knowledge every single day. It's why our people are so passionate about what they do and how they do it. And it's why we need people like YOU. Come shape our future with us and make a real and lasting impact across our teams.

Your opportunity:

Reporting to the General Counsel, the Senior Legal Counsel provides expert legal leadership across high-value and high-risk activities including commercial contracts, property, planning, the environment, construction, safety, employment, governance, and regulatory matters. You’ll advise and influence at the highest levels, including the CEO, executive leadership, and other senior leaders.

You will pro-actively lead legal strategy and deliver timely advice on complex matters and ensure that risk is appropriately managed through commercially considered, solutions focused, and forward-thinking advice.

This includes:

  • Delivering strategic legal support on procurement frameworks, commercial contracting, regulatory compliance, disputes, and construction projects.

  • Manage and advise on our extensive property portfolio and tenure related matters including in respect of legislative powers;

  • Leading complex legal investigations including Crime and Corruption Commission matters and Public Interest Disclosure applications.

  • Managing external advisors to ensure high-quality, fit for purpose support within budget.

  • Coach and develop internal stakeholders to improve legal literacy and risk informed practices

  • Advising on corporate governance and the legal implications of organisational strategy.

  • Contributing to policy design, operational transformation and business improvement initiatives.

As a leader, you’ll also mentor and develop legal and non-legal professionals, shaping legal capability across the business and fostering a high-performance culture of accountability, integrity, and continuous learning.

About you:

You will bring significant post admission experience (either in private practice and/or in house) with a commercially minded approach and an ability to apply critical thinking to drive outcomes, gained through progressive roles in complex corporate and regulated environments.

Your background demonstrates:

  • Proven capability delivering strategic legal counsel on a diverse range of areas including commercial, property, environmental, safety, regulatory and construction projects.

  • Confidence navigating multi-stakeholder environments, including public sector or utility settings.

  • A collaborative, trusted advisor approach, with the leadership and gravitas to influence senior decision-makers.

  • A strong sense of integrity, accountability, and professional leadership.

You will need to be admitted to practise in Queensland and eligible to hold an unrestricted practising certificate.

At UU, we celebrate diversity. We genuinely believe that bringing together diversity of thoughts, perspectives and expressions is key and crucial to our success as a business.
