What the role is all about

The Associate Engineer role is responsible for contributing to the design, development, testing, deployment and maintenance of software systems. Working within an agile cross-functional team and reporting to the Engineering Manager, the role supports the delivery of secure, scalable, and maintainable software systems. The Associate Engineer participates in the full software development lifecycle, collaborates with technical and non-technical stakeholders, and progressively develops technical capability while contributing to high-quality engineering outcomes. Day to day of the role you’ll be doing:

  • Design, develop and implement software features, enhancements and bug fixes in line with technical specifications and coding standards.
  • Write clean, maintainable, and testable code using approved programming languages and frameworks.
  • Develop and maintain automated tests (unit, integration, and end-to-end) to support continuous integration and delivery.
  • Participate in peer code reviews to ensure quality, performance, and adherence to engineering standards.
  • Maintain and improve existing applications and services, including defect resolution and minor refactoring.
  • Assist in monitoring, troubleshooting, and resolving production issues to maintain system reliability.
  • Follow security, compliance and change management practices to safeguard systems and data.
  • Contribute to technical documentation, including system design, APIs and development processes.
  • Participate in agile ceremonies such as sprint planning, stand-ups and retrospectives.
  • Collaborate with Product Managers, Designers and other stakeholders to clarify requirements and deliver technical solutions.
  • Communicate progress, risks and technical issues in a clear and timely manner.
  • Engage in continuous professional development and apply organisational engineering standards in daily work.

Who we’re looking for

  • Tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 12 months’ software development experience, with proficiency in at least one language such as Scala, Kotlin or Java.
  • Working knowledge of Agile/Kanban methodologies and experience working effectively within a cross-functional team.
  • Foundational full-stack development skills, with an understanding of front-end, back-end and data-driven systems.
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals, including coding standards, software design principles, version control and automated testing.
  • Strong problem-solving, debugging and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
