Senior Design Engineers will lead the design of prototypes and production level systems, subsystems and components for military vehicles over the product life cycle. The work will be carried out within a combination of matrix and cross functional project specific teams using Mil, ISO, AS and Organisational standards.
As a Senior Design Engineer, you can anticipate some of your day-to-day tasks to include:
- Conceive and select concepts in response to Customer Requirements using a range of tools and methods including weighted Trade Off Studies, DFMEA, Design for Safety, etc.;
- Evolve selected concepts into documented prototype designs using integrated CAD/PDM (CATIA V5, Siemens NX and Siemens TEAMCENTER);
- Support manufacture and verification of prototypes and incorporate test results into production designs as appropriate;
- Develop, release and maintain production documentation;
- Participate in formal and informal Design Reviews with internal and external stakeholders;
- Work with and assist suppliers in the production of Rheinmetall designed components and systems;
- Support and lead the development of Junior Engineers within your area of expertise and in general and;
- Provide problem solving and continuous improvement support to Production and Through Life Support teams.

We are delivering several Major programs including LAND 400 Phase 2 and LAND 121 (Trucks) whilst developing new products across our tactical and logistic product ranges. We have immediate vacancies available for experienced Mechanical Design Engineers to be based at either, MILVEHCOE (Military Vehicle Centre of Excellence) in Redbank, Brisbane or our Melbourne office.
We are seeking innovative engineers with a minimum of 7 years’ experience of mechanical design that are interested in leading product and component design emanating from requirements and specifications.

The suitable candidate should have a well-developed understanding of the product lifecycle and be able to apply knowledge, skills and experience in the development process to ensure the establishment of innovative solutions. In this process it is expected that the Senior Design Engineer will take ownership and lead the development of complex sub-system design from concept through to production, demonstrating the ability to communicate the design across functional lines. This includes the application of planning and analysis to ensure suitable input into project plans, options development, DFM, DFMEA, safety and validation.
The experience and skillset best suited to this role includes:
- Hold tertiary qualifications in engineering (Mechanical, Mechatronics or similar);
- Minimum of 7 years’ experience in a similar role;
- Experience with both NX and CATIA preferred;
- Engineers with design management experience, but not CAD, will be considered;
- Demonstrated experience in cradle to grave product development i.e. complete product development cycle;
- Strong preference for military vehicle or heavy vehicle experience;
- Demonstrate strong interpersonal communication, consultation and negotiation skills;
- Ability to relocate if not located in Brisbane or Melbourne;
- Be eligible for an Australian Government Security Clearance and have the capacity to satisfy pre-employment screening (Applicants MUST hold Australian Citizenship); and
- An ability to travel internationally and interstate when and if required.
