The Opportunity – 24mth Fixed Term Position
The position of Category Specialist will be responsible for providing specialist advice and executing Category Management activities in line with specified guidelines and business requirements to increase productivity, lower costs, manage risks and unlock organisational value safely and sustainably.
Reporting to the Manager Major Projects & Procurement key role accountabilities include:
- Drives cross-functional outcomes through collaborative engagement and influencing underpinned by deep sourcing expertise and end-to-end category and contract management
- Contributes to an inclusive culture that strives to drive value and innovation
- Supports the Category to procure goods and / or services to ensure both project and optimal commercial outcomes are achieved, including:
- Analysis of opportunities to optimise spend and reduce supply and project risk across categories
- Develops effective collaborative relationships with internal business leaders to understand current and future business requirements, to forecast demand, and verify established contracts are effective, and with suppliers to ensure optimum delivery quality and sustained performance in line with business and project objectives.
- Ensures that the necessary Contract handover activities are completed to enable the Major Projects team to effectively administer the Contract.
- Develops and executes category and sourcing strategies that optimise cost and are strategically aligned to the Major Projects portfolio
- Assisting with and/or leading commercial contract negotiations with vendors for strategic contracts
- Engaging with key stakeholders across the business to seek endorsements & approvals
- Monitoring existing contracts and the portfolio of suppliers supporting the business ensuring optimal usage & performance against business and project expectations
- Completing required internal documentation and approvals in accordance with South32 standards and policies
- Executes activities that contribute to the Local Procurement Plan including the identification of Indigenous Supply opportunities.
- Develop, maintain and share market intelligence regarding vendors and innovation applicable to operations
- Provides first line risk assurance over Category Management activity and verifies compliance with Commercial Policies, Procedures, Frameworks and Processes
About You
You will be required to have the following:
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in Commercial/ Supply/Projects environment
- Preferred 12 months strategic sourcing or category management experience
- Mining & metals experience preferred
Qualifications
- National Diploma or advanced certificate in Business, Commerce, Finance, Engineering, or related disciplines

This role will preferably be based at our office in the heart of the Perth CBD, however we can accommodate a diverse range of candidates requirements. We understand and value the benefits flexibility brings and operate a hybrid work model (in the office and from home)
