The opportunity:

Project Technical Leads/Design Managers lead the technical delivery of our projects. The Project Technical Lead (PTL) works in partnership with a project manager to lead the team from inception to execution.

The PTL is accountable for coordinating all multi-disciplinary activities and inputs by the technical team to ensure an integrated technical solution is achieved. It is responsible for the technical quality of all deliverables – on time, within budget, and to the client’s satisfaction.

Co-ordinating with Practice Leads, Market Sector Leads and Group Leaders, you will provide the right person for the right project and ensure an appropriately skilled and resourced technical group to meet business operational and strategic needs.

Finally, we expect you to develop strategic direction for the national Water team in response to company and sector strategies. Plus, lead client and project pursuits as required, as well as work with the Practice and Sector Leaders to define strategy and build our reputation, skills, knowledge, and business.

Key aspects of the role include:

Technical Development

  • Lead and facilitate the technical development of the NZ Water PTL community.

  • Provide clarity on career paths and career progression of PTLs.

  • Mentor, enable support and guidance to develop PTLs.

  • Assess the technical competencies of PTLs and advise on matching appropriate PTLs with the type and the level of complexity of our projects.

  • Co-ordinate the development and use of materials that improve the accuracy and efficiency of service delivery, including IP, guidelines, standards, training materials, tools and processes, etc.

Culture of Innovation & Improvement

  • Contribute to strategic development of the PTL discipline in conjunction with the Sector & Practice Leaders as well Group Leader and Regional Directors.

  • Foster a culture of both co-operation within the PTL discipline and co-operation between disciplines aimed at achieving what is best for the project, the client and Stantec.

  • Facilitate the capture, development, and use of Intellectual Property (IP), best practices and tools to support the ‘developing a world-class engineering and delivery’ culture

Resourcing & Workloads

  • Work with Sector Leaders, Practice Leaders, Group Leaders, and clients to ensure that the PTLs has sufficient capability and capacity to meet the needs of the market and to cope with workload.

  • Ensure pursuit, bid and project managers include appropriate specialist technical input in business development, pursuits, bids and projects aimed at delivering the “right solution”.

  • Participate in projects in line with Stantec Core Values and in accordance with the Stantec Quality, Safety & Environment Systems and Project Quality Procedures

About you:

You will have a tertiary qualification in a relevant engineering degree with at least 10 years experience in the Water industry and membership of a relevant engineering professional body. You will be recognised across the industry and have good interpersonal skills to develop and maintain positive relationships with internal and external clients and stakeholders. Highly developed consulting skills are a must to achieve mutually successful project outcomes, as well as good written and verbal communication skills. Leadership skills are important too for mentoring and motivating employees and to be a role model within the business.
