Lead Environmental Operations Specialist

About the Role
As the Lead Environmental Operations Specialist, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality, timely, and efficient environmental services that support Sydney Water’s operations. Your leadership will ensure that our environmental practices align with our Environmental Management System, helping us meet both regulatory and operational goals.
In this role, you'll collaborate closely with the Environmental Operations Manager, mentoring and coaching a team of Environmental Specialists for timely incident response and effective internal engagement on operational projects.
Additionally, the role contributes to maturing systems of tracking workflow and transparent reporting on the achievements of the team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead Environmental Practices: champion environmental management across Sydney Water’s operations, enhancing business, customer, and environmental outcomes.
- Regulatory Guidance: drive the determination of environmental approval pathways, ensuring compliance with environmental legislation and quality standards.
- Manage Approvals & Licenses: oversee environmental approvals, licenses, and permits, and lead the auditing and reporting process.
- Team Support: support the team to ensure the provision of timely, accurate and high-quality environmental planning and management expertise in response to information requests.
- Operational Leadership: distribute work, manage rosters and monitor, evaluate and report on team performance, capturing issues to be addressed through business improvement and management.
- Mentorship: support the professional development of your team through on-the-job training, mentorship, and fostering internal collaboration.
- Policy & Procedure Reviews: lead and contribute to reviews of policies and procedures in relation to environmental planning and management processes.
About You
We are looking for a strategic leader with a strong background in environmental management who thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate will have:
- Tertiary Qualification: a degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, or a related field.
- Experience: extensive expertise in environmental impact assessments (EIA) and a proven track record in implementing environmental strategies and actions.
- Environmental Knowledge: deep understanding of NSW and Commonwealth environmental legislation and current environmental issues, particularly those facing the water industry.
- Leadership Skills: excellent communication, negotiation, and influencing skills to engage stakeholders and drive change.
