The Role
We are seeking a Senior Design Engineer to join our team and lead the delivery of technical design solutions across a diverse portfolio of rail infrastructure projects, including passenger rail, heavy haul, inland rail, and intermodal. This role will suit an experienced rail engineer with strong technical design capability and a solid understanding of rail corridor infrastructure, including interfaces with civil works such as earthworks, drainage, and stormwater, while contributing to coordinated, compliant, and buildable project outcomes.

  • Lead the delivery of technical design packages for rail infrastructure projects across multiple sectors.
  • Provide senior engineering input across rail corridor design and associated infrastructure interfaces.
  • Develop practical, compliant, and buildable design solutions across all project stages.
  • Contribute to the delivery of passenger rail, heavy haul, inland rail, and intermodal projects.
  • Prepare, review, and coordinate design documentation, calculations, and technical deliverables.
  • Manage design interfaces between rail infrastructure and associated civil elements including earthworks, drainage, and stormwater.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams to achieve integrated design outcomes.
  • Identify technical risks, resolve design issues, and contribute to efficient project delivery.
  • Ensure design outputs meet client, project, and industry standards and requirements.
  • Support project planning, programme coordination, and delivery of design milestones.
  • Use relevant design tools, ideally including 12d, to support technical design development.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to junior engineers and designers as required.


About You
You are a highly capable Senior Design Engineer with strong experience in rail infrastructure design and a proven ability to deliver complex technical packages within multidisciplinary project environments. You bring experience across rail project types such as passenger rail, heavy haul, inland rail, and intermodal, along with an understanding of rail corridor design and key interfaces with civil infrastructure including earthworks, drainage, and stormwater.

  • Proven experience in a Senior Design Engineer role within rail infrastructure projects for an engineering consultancy.
  • Strong technical rail design experience across passenger rail, heavy haul, inland rail, and/or intermodal projects.
  • Understanding of rail corridor infrastructure and associated design interfaces with civil works.
  • Experience contributing to designs involving earthworks, drainage, stormwater, and related corridor elements.
  • Ability to lead technical design packages and deliver practical, compliant, and coordinated solutions.
  • Experience preparing and reviewing design documentation, calculations, and technical deliverables.
  • Strong understanding of relevant rail, client, and industry design standards and requirements.
  • Proficiency in relevant design software, ideally including 12d.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong technical judgement, problem-solving capability, and attention to detail.
  • Well-developed communication skills and the ability to guide junior team members.
