With over 10,300 employees, SYSTRA's mission is to design safe and sustainable engineering solutions to bring people together, develop social inclusion and facilitate access to employment, education and leisure throughout the world.

About the role

Our Security and Technology Solutions team is seeking a motivated professional to join our team as a Systems Engineer to provide essential technical support and engineering expertise in navigating the complexities of modern military systems. In this role, you will work within multidisciplinary teams to deliver integrated engineering and safety solutions that are robust, compliant, and aligned with Defence mission requirements, offering an excellent opportunity to deepen your technical expertise under the guidance of industry experts.
A NV1 Defence Security Clearance is essential for this role. This is a Canberra based role.
Key responsibilities will include, but not limited to:
  • Lead the development and maintenance of core engineering artefacts such as SEMP and TCP while ensuring safety assurance is integrated into every phase of the system lifecycle.
  • Ensure compliance with legislative frameworks and technical regulations, specifically managing risks
  • Systematically identify hazards and implement effective risk controls, continuously monitoring the operating environment to detect emerging risks or degraded safety controls.
  • Perform quality control on vendor documentation and conduct engineering and safety audits to verify that support services meet mission-critical safety standards.
  • Manage Configuration Control Boards (CCBs) and Engineering Review Boards (ERBs), ensuring that any system modifications do not compromise established safety arguments or airworthiness.
  • Exercise formal Technical/Engineering Authority to develop and authorise Engineering Change Proposals (ECPs) and safety-related design modifications.
  • Act as a technical interface between leadership and system managers to foster a generative safety culture and ensure transparent reporting of safety issues.
About you
The ideal candidate brings a proven track record of delivering systems engineering outcomes within high-stakes Defence environments, backed by deep expertise in safety assurance and technical certification. You would ideally have the following experience:
  • Proven experience working within CASG/Defence project environments, applying the Land Materiel Safety Manual (LMSM) and Defence Aviation Safety Regulation (DASR).
  • Demonstrated background in system safety engineering, including hazard analysis, safety case development, and the implementation of safety management systems (SMS).
  • Extensive experience in applying SFARP (So Far As Is Reasonably Practicable) principles to complex engineering designs and operational decision-making.
  • Track record of drafting and reviewing high-level procedural documentation, including Technical Certification Plans, and leading safety-focused audits of third-party vendors.
  • Experience achieving design, testing, and integration milestones within an integrated workforce, specifically focusing on how system interactions impact overall safety performance.
  • Skilled in using tools like MIL-STD-882 or equivalent standards for systematic hazard identification, risk assessment, and mitigation throughout the capability lifecycle.
