We deliver power to Tasmanians. Our vision is to be trusted by our customers to deliver today and create a better tomorrow.

We own, operate and maintain the electricity transmission and distribution network in Tasmania. We deliver a safe, cost-effective and reliable electricity supply to more than 295,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers. We facilitate the transfer of electricity between Victoria and Tasmania via Basslink, the sub-sea electricity interconnector. We also provide telecommunications and technology services.

About the role

Band 4 - base salary from $129,585 per annum (plus super) - total package to be negotiated with preferred candidate based on skills and experience

TasNetworks is seeking a highly skilled Telecommunications Network Engineer to play a key role in designing, building, and operating carrier-grade IP network infrastructure. This is an opportunity to work at the forefront of critical communications systems that support both operational technologies and customer-facing services across Tasmania.

In this role, you’ll bring deep technical expertise and a hands-on approach to managing and evolving a complex telecommunications environment. You’ll contribute to high-availability network design, support major infrastructure projects, and ensure the delivery of reliable, secure, and scalable network services.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to –

  • Provide high-level engineering expertise for the management, operation, augmentation, and construction of IP carrier network infrastructure
  • Support the timely delivery of network services to meet commercial targets and customer expectations
  • Maintain professional and effective communication with internal teams, customers, and external stakeholders
  • Deliver engineering input across capital works, operations, and maintenance for IP, Ethernet, and MPLS-based networks (core, aggregation, and access layers)
  • Design resilient, high-availability networks aligned with regulatory and internal standards, including development of architecture and detailed design documentation
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex network incidents across multi-vendor environments, including root cause analysis and preventative action planning
  • Plan, manage, and deliver network projects and programs within scope, time, cost, and quality parameters
  • Assist in the testing and development of new service types and customer equipment

About you

You’re an experienced network engineer with a strong foundation in IP networking, Ethernet, and carrier-grade architectures. Whether through a relevant engineering degree or hands-on industry experience, you bring the technical depth needed to design, build, and support complex telecommunications networks.

You’re confident working across protocols like BGP, OSPF, IS-IS, and MPLS, and comfortable operating in multi-vendor, high-availability environments. From commissioning new infrastructure to troubleshooting critical incidents, you take a practical, solutions-focused approach.

You understand the full lifecycle of network services supporting pre-sales, delivery, and ongoing operations while keeping customer outcomes front of mind. Your knowledge of network security, project delivery, and regulatory standards ensures you deliver reliable and compliant solutions.

You communicate clearly, adapt to different audiences, and produce high-quality documentation. Above all, you bring a strong safety mindset, take ownership of your work, and consistently deliver results in complex, fast-paced environments.

What's on offer

This is a permanent opportunity, based out of Hobart, offering an attractive remuneration and benefits package.

At TasNetworks we want to power a bright future for our people, our community and our customers. We offer a supportive work environment where safety is at the heart of everything we do.
