We deliver power to Tasmanians. Our vision is to be trusted by our customers to deliver today and create a better tomorrow.
We own, operate and maintain the electricity transmission and distribution network in Tasmania. We deliver a safe, cost-effective and reliable electricity supply to more than 295,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers. We facilitate the transfer of electricity between Victoria and Tasmania via Basslink, the sub-sea electricity interconnector. We also provide telecommunications and technology services.
About the role
As Principal Power Systems Engineer, you will provide technical leadership that supports the safe, secure and reliable operation of Tasmania’s power system, both today and as it evolves to meet future energy needs. This role exists to resolve complex power system challenges, guide critical operational and planning decisions, and ensure the network is equipped to integrate emerging technologies while maintaining system security. Your expertise will underpin key technical advice across the business, helping shape network capability, operational resilience and long-term system performance.
Working across planning and operational timeframes, you will influence decisions that affect network operations, future connections, system limits and broader transmission network performance. You will be a trusted technical authority for power system dynamics, providing specialist advice to operational teams, supporting major connection and integration projects, and contributing to the development of system services and operational frameworks. The role also provides leadership to engineers and technical specialists, strengthening technical capability, driving high engineering standards and ensuring critical knowledge is retained and applied across the business.
What you’ll do:
- Lead complex power system studies and technical investigations to support network security, performance and future system development.
- Provide expert advice on operational limits, system security and network performance to support planning, real-time operations and transmission network decision-making.
- Oversee the development and ongoing optimisation of network security schemes, protection strategies and system operating frameworks.
- Contribute to the integration of new generation and emerging technologies through technical assessment, modelling and strategic power system planning.
- Provide technical leadership and mentoring to engineers and project teams while promoting engineering excellence, knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.
About you
You are a highly respected power systems professional with deep expertise in transmission network analysis and a strong track record of applying technical knowledge to resolve complex system challenges. With extensive experience in power system modelling and stability analysis, you are comfortable interpreting technical, operational and regulatory requirements and translating them into practical outcomes. Your understanding of transmission network operation, system security and evolving energy technologies allows you to make sound decisions that balance risk, reliability and long-term network performance.
Known for your technical credibility and measured approach, you build confidence with colleagues, operational teams and senior leaders alike. You enjoy guiding and developing engineers, creating an environment where technical excellence can thrive. Curious and forward-thinking, you continually look for opportunities to improve processes, strengthen capability and adapt to the changing demands of the energy industry while maintaining a focus on safety, quality and business outcomes.
You will bring:
- Minimum 10 years’ experience analysing and assessing high-voltage transmission networks, supported by tertiary qualifications in Electrical Power Engineering.
- Advanced capability in power system modelling and analysis, including strong proficiency with PSS/E and other industry-standard software.
- Deep understanding of power system security, network protection, transmission operations and the National Electricity Market regulatory framework.
- Proven ability to lead engineers and project teams, delivering complex technical work to agreed outcomes, timeframes and standards.
- Strong commercial awareness, critical thinking and communication skills, with the ability to influence decisions and provide trusted technical advice.
