We facilitate the transfer of electricity between Victoria and Tasmania via Basslink, the sub-sea electricity interconnector. We also provide telecommunications and technology services.
About the role
TasNetworks is seeking an experienced Construction Manager – Substation to oversee the delivery of substation construction activities for the North West Transmission Developments (NWTD). This role provides critical on‑site leadership, ensuring contractors, subcontractors, and stakeholders deliver high‑quality work that meets specifications, safety standards, and project requirements.
With extensive site presence, you will coordinate construction activities, manage interfaces, oversee testing and commissioning, and ensure all work is completed to the highest standards of safety, quality, and compliance. You will play a key role in driving performance across multiple regional sites, resolving issues, and ensuring consistent delivery across all substation work packages.
This is a hands‑on leadership role suited to someone with deep electrical construction expertise and a strong ability to manage contractors, logistics, and field operations in a complex major project environment.
What you’ll do
- Oversee and audit construction contractors to ensure capability, compliance, and quality
- Enforce strict adherence to safety regulations, building codes, and environmental standards
- Supervise field personnel, inspectors, and subcontractors, resolving issues and fostering high performance
- Coordinate logistics, materials, permits, and contractor interfaces across multiple sites
- Manage change orders, progress reporting, commissioning activities, and final documentation
- Serve as the primary contact for contractors and internal teams, ensuring clear communication and expectations
- Oversee testing, energisation, punch lists, documentation, and site demobilisation
- Travel between regional sites to maintain consistent delivery and performance
About you
You bring extensive experience in electrical and substation construction, with a strong understanding of construction methodologies, safety systems, and quality control. You are confident interpreting blueprints, managing schedules, and overseeing budgets, and you thrive in environments where technical expertise and practical leadership are essential.
Your communication skills enable you to translate complex information into clear insights, and you build strong relationships with contractors, delivery partners, and technical teams. You are experienced in managing conflict and resolving issues on complex or high‑profile projects, including those operating in politically sensitive environments.
You have a background in major infrastructure, transmission, energy, or comparable capital projects, and you bring a collaborative, solutions‑focused approach to field leadership. Tertiary qualifications in engineering, construction management, project management, or a related discipline are desirable, and experience within regulated utility or government‑owned environments is an advantage.
What's on offer
This is a full-time opportunity, fixed term for the term of the project, based in Tasmania with an attractive remuneration and benefits package. The role will be based in the North West with some intrastate travel required.
