Do you regularly travel from Masterton to Wellington on the train? Our Designated Passenger Operator is a part‑time role designed to complement another primary job and is ideally suited to commuters. Operators work peak‑time passenger services between Masterton and Wellington, typically travelling into Wellington in the morning and returning in the evening, before and after their main employment during the day. The role averages between 20 and 40 hours per fortnight and is not generally suitable as a sole source of employment, as there can be extended unpaid wait times in Wellington between services. Essentially, the role allows employees to be paid while commuting.
The core responsibilities of a Designated Passenger Operator focus on ensuring a safe and positive experience for customers. This includes delivering high‑quality customer service, collecting fares, and following safe platform procedures. Operators also support the Train Manager during service disruptions and emergency situations, playing an important role in maintaining safety, communication, and smooth operations on board
