The Opportunity
The rapid growth in renewable generation has increased the complexity of operating the high voltage network and delivering the necessary outage program. This requires significant effort and responsibility. Thus, we are currently seeking an experienced Senior Operations Planning Engineer to join the team at Transgrid to help manage customer expectations while achieving optimal outcomes for the end consumers.
Reporting to the Control Centre Manager, the Senior Engineer - Operations Planning, will be responsible for providing highly specialised advice and leadership in High Voltage network operation, Customer Engagement, facilitating safe access for work on High Voltage apparatus and outage planning.
It is essential that the incumbent has a full understanding of the impact on customer operations to enable effective decision making.
Key Responsibilities
As a Senior Operations Planning Engineer, you will be responsible to;
- Collaborate with customers to improve understanding of outage requirements and associated impacts to optimise outcomes
- Resolve conflicts in outage requirements to bring about cost effective solutions while maintaining system security, minimise market impact, maintaining acceptable network reliability and maximise outage utilisation.
- Manage a co-ordinated 2 year ahead outage plan
- Perform Power System studies and create Contingency Plans for submitted outage plans as required.
- Assume responsibility for outage arrangement process, facilitating safe access to the high voltage network, achieving quality outcomes within targeted timeframes.
- Provide real-time advice to control room staff during network outages and system emergencies.
- Identify local issues that represent significant change and assist in the development of change management programs
- Development and implementation of training programs required for staff development and succession planning
Skills & Experience
To be successful in this role you will have:
- Tertiary qualifications at degree level Degree in Electrical Engineering
- Extensive experience in the relevant areas of planning, operation, construction and maintenance of electricity transmission systems
- Solid knowledge and experience of operating characteristics of the entire range of high voltage and secondary equipment used in power systems; power system protection; automatic control systems and their application in power system operation
- Solid demonstrable knowledge and experience in energy market, power system analysis, and operational planning
- Specialised knowledge in relation to the application of Safe Systems of Work and how these can be applied in order to allow safe and efficient access to the High Voltage system to perform work
- Specialised knowledge in regard to High Voltage system outages and their impact on system security, reliability, customers and the national electricity market.
- Well-developed system analysis skills that can be applied to develop functional specifications and testing plans for new or upgraded operating tools/systems.
- Provide technical oversight to other technical staff within the group
- Comprehensive understanding of risk management – qualitative and quantitative
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of all relevant legislation, policies and procedures
