Electrical Substations Technician (Developing and Senior)

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a variety of grades of Substations Technicians to either perform or lead tasks related to the installation, commissioning and maintenance of substation assets.

We are looking for goal oriented, committed and agile people who have experience as an electrician or who has an understanding of high voltage network assets.

As a developing Substation Technician, you will undertake a comprehensive training program while gathering practical and technical expertise in substation electrical work including fault finding, repairs, maintenance, installation, and commissioning of assets withing Transgrid’s Substations and deliver all elements of these tasks as required to meet customer expectations.

As a Senior Substations Technicians, you will be responsible for providing leadership capabilities with overall responsibility for completion of the work, compliance with safety and environmental requirements, data quality and reporting. You will require an advanced level of practical and technical expertise and be a subject matter expert, providing mentoring and training to substation technicians and apprentices.

Skills and Experience

What we expect from you as a developing Substations Technician:

  • Certificate III in Electrotechnology or equivalent Electrical Trades Course Certificate
  • A current Australian Driver’s License
  • Experience in the maintenance, construction and commissioning of high voltage substation assets
  • An understanding of Primary and Substation Secondary Systems
  • Good oral and written presentation skills
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills with the ability to work both autonomously and in a team environment
  • An understanding of diagnostic testing techniques for substation apparatus
  • Currently authorised or be willing and capable to obtain authorisation for High Voltage Switching
  • Prepared to work away from home for nominated periods of time
  • Ability to interpret schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Willing to engage in external work opportunities on non TransGrid assets and locations
  • Willing to be included in a ‘on call’ roster to provide afterhours standby services and respond to system incidents

Supporting Skills and Qualifications:

  • Familiarity and experience with “Wiring Rules” and other Australian Standards
  • NSW Fair Trading Electrical Supervisor Certificate or Contractor Licence

What we expect from you as a Senior Substation Technicians:

  • Certificate III in Electrotechnology or equivalent Electrical Trades Course Certificate
  • A current Australian Driver’s License
  • Extensive experience in the maintenance, construction and commissioning of high voltage substation assets
  • Extensive electrical trade experience
  • Extensive knowledge of Substations plant and associated systems
  • Well-developed understanding of Primary and Substation Secondary Systems
  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills
  • Good oral and written presentation skills
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills with the ability to work both autonomously and in a team environment
  • Able to work away from home for extended periods of time
  • Advanced understanding of HV Substation diagnostic testing techniques
  • Competent in the use of IT Systems, Microsoft Office Applications and Enterprise Resource Planning Software
  • Understanding of the installation, maintenance and commissioning requirements associated with Transgrid’s substation infrastructure
  • Willing to be included in a ‘on call’ roster to provide afterhours standby services and respond to system incidents
  • Expertise in fault finding including the interpretation of schematic diagrams

Supporting Skills and Qualifications:
