As the Biospecimen Laboratory Manager, you will be responsible for providing high level technical and operational support to ensure the effective operation of the NSW Regional Biospecimen Services laboratory.

This role holds a central position within the Biospecimen Laboratory team, and your influence will resonate throughout all facets of the team's operations. As the manager, you will have the opportunity to establish the laboratory's ethos, and have significant influence over its day-to-day operations.

In this role you will:

  • Coordinate the day-to-day biospecimen technical support services across Callaghan and HMRI based programs.
  • Ensure quality control of laboratory setups with stringent adherence to protocols.
  • Provide specialist advice and general assistance to staff and students in relation to current biospecimen best practice.
  • Provide direct operational support to the blood processing and biobanking teams.

This 12-month fixed term position is full time and will be located at the Hunter Medical Research Institute (Awabakal and Worimi land). There is a possibility for extension with this role.

How will you inspire us?

You will have:

  • Demonstrated experience in a diagnostic, industry, or tertiary institution laboratory, specifically in blood processing or other haematology.
  • Strong leadership values and the ability to remain calm, focused, and organised under pressure.
  • Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders at all levels.
  • High level customer service skills including the ability to prioritise multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

What we offer

The remuneration for this position is from $86,842 to $95,822 + 17% superannuation and is commensurate with skills and experience.

Demonstrated experience in a diagnostic, industry or tertiary institution laboratory supported by a tertiary qualification in health or life sciences or degree with subsequent relevant experience; or extensive experience and specialist expertise or broad knowledge in technical fields; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
  2. Technical knowledge and skills in biospecimen processing including such tasks as blood processing and DNA/RNA extraction. Appreciation for biobanking workflows and appropriate biospecimen handling protocols including storage, retrieval and cataloguing.
  3. High level proficiency and confidence in handling large data sets or generating reports through IT systems including Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word. Experience with or proficiency in OpenSpecimen software highly desirable.
  4. Demonstrated high level of customer service and organisational skills including the ability to prioritise multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  5. Ability to show leadership and exceptional interpersonal skills by empowering staff to meet high standards and delivery of targets whilst actively managing performance and KPIs to achieve positive outcomes.
