The Opportunity
Join Ventia’s team as a Mechanical Fitter / Tamper Operator based out of our Wingfield depot, supporting rail infrastructure projects across South Australia. This is a permanent, full-time role, primarily working Monday to Friday, with flexibility required to work altered rosters when working away. The position is largely metro-based, with occasional travel to regional areas throughout the year.
In this hands-on role, you will operate and maintain track surfacing machines, including tamping machines and ballast regulators, across various rail networks. The role offers great variety, combining machine operation with both reactive and preventative maintenance of plant, equipment and railway infrastructure. It’s an excellent opportunity to contribute to critical rail projects while building your skills in a supportive, safety focused environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate tampers and track machines safely, delivering track surfacing activities in line with required processes.
- Perform servicing, repairs, preventative maintenance and minor overhauls on plant and equipment to ensure assets are safe, operational and fit for purpose.
- Complete maintenance records, inspections and reporting, identifying and escalating any risks, faults or issues as required.
- Take ownership of workmanship quality, ensuring compliance with standards, specifications and project requirements.
- Work collaboratively with supervisors and project teams to meet deadlines and project targets.
- Actively participate in safety processes including job starts and SWMS, upholding strong safety, quality and environmental standards.
About You
- Cert III (or higher) in a relevant mechanical trade (e.g. Mechanical Fitter, Diesel Mechanic or similar) (Required).
- Experience within rail infrastructure or heavy plant environments, with strong mechanical fitting capability (hydraulic and pneumatic systems).
- Tamper operator qualifications and demonstrated experience operating track machines (Required).
- Valid RIW card (Required).
- HR licence (Desirable).
- Willingness to travel and work away from home, with flexibility to meet project demands.
- Willing and able to pass a Rail CAT 1 medical.
