The centralAlliance is a collaborative agreement between Te Whatu Ora, Whanganui, and MidCentral District Hospitals to maximise their resources and knowledge. The Foundation Agreement was formalised in August 2009.
Te Whatu Ora, MidCentral Hospital includes the Palmerston North Public Hospital precinct and Horowhenua Health Centre, with a combined 350 in-patient beds. Te Whatu Ora, Whanganui Hospital with 172 in-patient Beds.

The centralAlliance project partners are two of 20 Te Whatu Ora Health New Zealand district hospitals across New Zealand established nationally on January 1, 2001, under the NZ Public Health and Disability Act 2000 (NZPHD).

About the Role
A full time permanent role has become available for a Trade Assistant-Plumbing in our Palmerston North site ( min 40 hours per week). You will be reporting to the Facility Manager and will be responsible for providing plumbing and drainage repairs & maintenance to Palmerston North Hospital assets. The scope of plumbing works includes general repairs & preventative maintenance that does not require registration as a plumber (no fix and unfixing Sanitary work).
This role will deliver a high standard of work in line with company, contractual and legislative & safety procedures prescribed and agreed between Auckland Council and Ventia. Important within the context of this position is the requirement for the staff member to perform other duties, as may be required, to ensure all mandated services are delivered as per the scope of the Full Facilities Contract.
Responsibilities:
- Represent the company in a professional manner whilst performing quality workmanship ensuring that the service is delivered to the customer’s and company’s satisfaction and within budget constraints.
- Continuously seek new and improved ways of service delivery, customer service and overall efficiency
- Effectively communicate with customers where required and to support other trades people in maximizing customer satisfaction.
- To actively participate and support an environment of teamwork and excellence in performance.
- Ensure that all safety, health, environment, and other legal requirements are met. License requirements maintained and updated as required. JSA's and compliance certificates completed as per legislative or other requirements.
- Complete all related paperwork as necessary in a timely manner e.g., timesheets, purchase orders, job dockets, minor estimates, technical reports etc.
- To be utilized on “on call” roster or overtime to suit hospital requirements. Current NZ Driver’s license is a requirement of this position or a valid overseas driver’s licence that can be converted into a NZ full driver’s licence. .
- May be required if requested to change hours to suit hospital demands
About You
To be successful in this role, you will ideally have experience in Plumbing relater work, be a good communicator, and have the ability to work with people from all walks of life.
Your attitude, flexibility, and willingness to help are key to your success in this role. Other requirements:
- Site Safe Passport or equivalent (preferred).
- Current New Zealand Driver’s License required or an overseas driver’s licence that can be converted into a New Zealand full driver’s licence. A manual driver’s license will be required for this role.
- CPR – First Aid Training (preferred).
- If staff are required to obtain qualifications to perform other duties, then Ventia will provide training to ensure staff will be able to perform these duties safely and to the required standard.
- Knowledge of workplace health and safety practices.
- Knowledge of power tool use, storage, and handling.
- Knowledge of current industry standards relevant to Trades Service operations.
Education and Qualification
- General trade assistant-plumbing experience
- Site Safe Passport or equivalent (preferred).
- CPR – First Aid Training (preferred).
- A manual driver’s license will be required for this role.
Technical Competencies
- Knowledge of workplace health and safety practices.
- Knowledge of power tool use, storage, and handling.
- Knowledge of current industry standards relevant to Trades Service operations
Skills and Experience
- Minimum 1 year experience plumbing experience in a Commercial/Industrial environment.
- Previous experience working in a building maintenance position involving large volumes of assets and programmed servicing schedules(advantageous) .
- Read and understand construction drawings and specifications.
