About the role
You’ll be working in a high performing, collaborative team, reporting to the General Counsel – Transport. You will have a high degree of autonomy in working with operational and commercial colleagues who will partner with you as a trusted advisor.

As part of the broader Ventia Corporate, Audit, Risk and Legal team, you will be working with a group of experienced lawyers and risk professionals who support the business with commercial and pragmatic advice, and who have recently been recognised as the 2023 Lawyers Weekly Corporate Counsel Awards infrastructure, utilities and energy team of the year.

This permanent role is based at the location of Ventia’s head office in Cremorne, Melbourne.

What you’ll be doing
As a Senior Legal Counsel in Ventia’s Transport Legal Team, you’ll work on a wide variety of matters including:

  • Supporting commercial, operational and bid teams on competitive transport tenders including review and negotiation of a range of O&M and services agreements, including some of Australia’s biggest transport projects;
  • Providing advice to Ventia’s operational and executive personnel about contractual and regulatory risk;
  • Operational support, including subcontract drafting and negotiation, development of contract administration resources, and providing ad hoc contract advice;
  • Dispute resolution, including contributing to strategies for prosecuting and defending customer, subcontractor and third party claims;
  • Regulatory work, including safety and environmental issues;
  • Delivery of training to operational and commercial personnel;
  • The opportunity to get involved in innovation and legal technology projects that seek to improve the way that Ventia’s legal team supports the business; and
  • Opportunities for corporate, governance, and M&A work with Ventia’s Corporate legal team.

About You
Our ideal candidate will have:

  • An Australian practising certificate;
  • 10+ years PQE as a solicitor, with experience in-house;
  • Commercial and contract expertise, preferably with construction and O&M services across a diverse range of projects;
  • Strong communication and influencing skills with the ability to engage effectively with diverse internal and external stakeholders;
  • A drive to deliver outcomes;
  • A great sense of humour, energy and the willingness to grow a team.
