Rail Systems Network Modelling - Undergraduate

  • Two undergraduate opportunities available to support rail service planning

  • Based at V/Line Head Office, 452 Flinders Street, Melbourne

  • 12-week paid program | Full-time opportunity for penultimate and final-year university students

V/Line’s purpose is to connect Victorians through safe, reliable, and accessible transport. We believe in giving all Victorians opportunities through travel and transport – connecting them to jobs, education, family and friends, services, tourism and trade.

V/Line is experiencing significant growth and we’re delivering more services, more trains, cheaper fares, and huge projects. With more than 3700 weekly train and coach services, an expansive freight network and unprecedented rail investment, millions of Victorians depend on us to deliver. You could be one of our 3100 committed team members who are up to the challenge.

About the role

Join our Network Strategy & Timetable team for a 12-week paid placement and gain hands-on experience applying analytical, mathematical and problem-solving skills to real-world rail network planning and timetable challenges.

This opportunity is designed for university students who are currently enrolled and will be undertaking the penultimate or final year of their degree in 2027.

Working alongside experienced professionals, you'll contribute to projects that support the planning and operation of Victoria's regional rail network. You'll receive mentoring throughout the program while developing an understanding of the tools, processes and decision-making involved in shaping future rail services.

The program is expected to commence between December 2026 and January 2027. While the program is designed as a 12-week full-time experience, flexible arrangements may be considered to support students balancing university commitments.

During the program, you'll gain exposure to rail systems modelling, timetable planning, operational analysis and rail network simulations, while working with teams across the business to understand how rail services are planned and delivered.

Key accountabilities include:

  • Assisting with the development and maintenance of rail systems models and operational simulations.

  • Supporting rail network planning and strategic timetable development activities.

  • Collecting, organising and analysing operational data.

  • Contributing to the validation and quality assurance of RailSys models and outputs.

  • Assisting with scenario testing of rail infrastructure and service planning initiatives.

  • Supporting the development of analytical tools, reporting and planning documentation.

  • Working collaboratively with subject matter experts across Network Strategy and Planning.

About you

We're looking for curious and motivated students who enjoy solving complex problems, working with data and applying analytical thinking to real-world rail network challenges.

Our ideal candidate will possess the following:

Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master's degree in Mathematics, Engineering, Transport Planning or a related discipline, and will be undertaking their penultimate or final year of study in 2027.

  • An aptitude for analytical thinking, problem-solving and working with data.

  • An interest in systems modelling, transport, infrastructure, operations or planning.

  • Experience using Microsoft Excel and other analytical tools.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate ideas and findings clearly.

  • Ability to learn new systems, technologies and concepts quickly.

  • A collaborative approach and willingness to work effectively as part of a team.
