Help shape the delivery of rail infrastructure works by providing environmental advice that supports safe, compliant and sustainable outcomes.
This 9-month parental leave opportunity is best suited to an experienced environmental professional who can quickly establish themselves in the role and confidently provide advice in a complex operational rail environment. The position offers a unique mix of environmental planning, field-based work and collaboration with operational teams across the rail network.
About the role
As an Advisor - Natural Resource Management, you'll provide environmental and regulatory advice to support rail maintenance and civil works programs. Working within the Vegetation Management team, you'll assess the impacts of works on protected flora and fauna, support environmental approvals and compliance requirements, provide advice on vegetation, waterways and reserve management, and help ensure V/Line meets its obligations under relevant environmental legislation.
This role combines field and office-based work, with regular travel across the network to undertake site assessments, support works planning, investigate environmental issues and work with internal and external stakeholders to reduce environmental risks within the rail reserve.
Given the nature of this parental leave opportunity, we're seeking someone who can operate with a high degree of autonomy, apply their technical expertise early on and confidently manage competing priorities across a geographically dispersed rail network.
Key accountabilities include:
Assess the potential impact of rail maintenance and civil works on protected flora and fauna.
Undertake environmental assessments and provide advice to support compliant delivery of works programs.
Prepare environmental approvals and referrals, including FFG and EPBC referrals where required.
Identify environmental risks and recommend measures to minimise impacts on native vegetation and fauna.
Provide advice on the management of flora, fauna, waterways, invasive plant and animal species, and rail reserve management.
Liaise with internal and external stakeholders (including government departments, statutory authorise and community groups) on environmental, vegetation and waterway management matters.
Investigate incidents of unauthorised vegetation damage within the rail reserve.
Support compliance with environmental legislation and regulatory requirements.
Assist with reserve management activities, record keeping and vegetation mapping using GIS applications.
Contribute to environmental awareness and understanding across operational and Asset Management teams.
About you
To be successful in this role, you’ll bring established environmental management experience within the rail industry, be comfortable working independently across multiple sites, and be ready to make an immediate contribution in a complex operational rail environment.
Our ideal candidate will possess the following:
Degree qualification in Ecology, Environmental Science or a related discipline.
Demonstrated experience providing environmental, vegetation management or natural resource management advice within a rail environment.
Experience working in waterway management.
Experience or knowledge working in heritage management.
Experience using GIS and applications to record and map vegetation.
Experience preparing environmental approvals and providing environmental advice to support works programs.
Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
Current driver's licence and willingness to undertake regular field work and travel including overnight stays as required.
Previous operational experience working in the rail environment is highly desirable.
If your skills or experience don’t exactly match our listed requirements, we still encourage you to apply. We value diverse perspectives and believe in the potential for growth and development where possible.
