About the role
The Principal Lawyer, Projects will report to the General Counsel and have significant responsibility for effectively managing V/Line’s legal work and legal risks for Projects . This role will provide legal, commercial and contractual advice, in particular in relation to the Victoria’s Big Build and other inter-agency projects, construction, design and third-party contracts and inter- agency agreements.
Key accountabilities include:
- Liaising with relevant project delivery agencies and other key project stakeholders.
- Coordinating legal matters with V/Line’s outsourced legal providers.
- Providing advice in other areas of law, including general commercial and contractual matters, FOI, privacy, safety, environmental and property matters, administrative law and claims.
- Preparation of policies and precedents with aim of continuous improvement.
- Supporting the General Counsel in analysing and advising on legal, regulatory, and commercial issues and identification of legal risk.
- Advising the business on legal risks and provide guidance on best practice management of legal risks .

The ideal candidate:
- Has quality legal firm or in-house experience
- An understanding of Victorian government
- An ability to work effectively autonomously and as part of a broader legal team
- Has strong interpersonal skills and leadership capability
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong contract interpretation and drafting skills
- Substantial legislative research and interpretation skills
- Demonstrates alignment to V/Line’s values of responsiveness, integrity, impartiality, accountability, respect, leadership and human rights
Qualifications
- Tertiary Qualifications in Law (essential)
- Current legal Practicing Certificate (essential)

The salary for this position commences at $145,000 package – we are open to a confidential discussion about your experience and salary expectations. The selection process may include a probity check, qualification check, reference check and a behavioural event interview
