  • Principal Design Reviewer - Signalling
  • Senior Engineer - Signalling






We are seeking two established and capable professionals to form our Signalling team within our newly created Design Review division:



  • Principal Design Reviewer - Signalling (Projects)
    • Provides project assurance through feedback to delivery teams based on the review of designs against the V/Line Safety Management System (SMS) and operational concepts.
    • Ensures that changes made to the V/Line network are safe, reliable, and accessible to all users.
  • Senior Engineer - Signalling (Projects)
    • Performs similar duties to the Principal role but with the additional requirement of being a Registered Professional Engineer in Victoria (RPEV) in electrical engineering.
    • Focuses on ensuring the safety, reliability, and accessibility of the V/Line network.




About the Roles

We are seeking a Principal Design Reviewer and a Senior Engineer to form our Signalling team within the Projects function.

These roles will coordinate and oversee design review activities across multiple projects, ensuring compliance with V/Line standards and operational concepts.



Key responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate V/Line and contract design review resources to meet the demands of design assurance activities.
  • Engage contractor design review resources to supplement internal V/Line capability where required.
  • Review signalling designs for compliance with V/Line SMS, Standards, and operational concepts.
  • Assess applications for derogation to V/Line standards in terms of safety, practicality, performance, reliability, and economic benefits.
  • Analyse and respond to requests for information and technical queries relating to project works.
  • Contribute to the development and/or assessment of applications for Type Approval.
  • Input to the development of future projects through review of reference and concept designs.
  • Endorsement of Engineering Change Notices (ECN).
  • Review as-built drawings.
  • Contribute to Corridor Wide Review Group activities.
  • Attend railway sites as required.
  • Contribute to V/Line delivered projects through design and checking where opportunities arise.



About You

You are a capable rail professional with considerable signalling experience. You have strong negotiation skills and build effective relationships with diverse stakeholders. You can draw on previous examples where you have achieved tasks related to quality, function, timeframes, and cost.



  • Qualifications & Professional Credentials
    • For the Senior Engineer role: Registered Professional Engineer in Victoria (RPEV) in electrical engineering.
    • For the Principal Design Reviewer role: Tertiary qualifications or experience and training equivalent to a Bachelor level education.



  • Essential requirements
    • Demonstrated significant experience in engineering, construction management, and solutions in complex rail infrastructure projects or large construction projects.
    • V/Line design competencies in signalling at unsupervised practitioner level or equivalent.
    • In depth knowledge of one or more of the following - Signalling Principles, Wayside Equipment, Interlocking Systems, CBI Data, Control System and Communication.
    • Sound organisational skills with demonstrated ability to work within tight and often conflicting timeframes.
    • Sound knowledge of V/Line and Victorian railway operations, along with demonstrated experience in design & delivering railway projects.
    • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage a broad range of matters affecting project planning, design, construction, cost, and quality control.
    • Ability to travel for work-including overnight stays-from time to time.



  • Desirable
    • People management capabilities.
    • Proficient analytical capabilities with the ability to convey complex and technical issues to a range of audiences.
    • Interpersonal skills to influence change, facilitate, and enhance performance within a cross-functional environment.




This role is a Risk Category 3 position and will require safety assessments and a medical check.
