About the role
As the Train Controller, you are an integral to the success of V/Line’s Operational Group. The Operations Group is responsible for the day-to-day delivery of train and coach services across regional Victoria and increasingly peri urban Melbourne.
Delivering works on-site, across a 24/7 rotating roster including weekends and public holidays, you are responsible to record and facilitate the implementation, coordination and planning of rollingstock across the rail corridor.
Key accountabilities include:
- Implementing and communicating the daily train plan while responding to changing operational requirements due to disruptions etc.
- Manage disruptions across the network, plan and advise train operators and relevant stakeholders of alterations to service.
- Provide ongoing updates to Senior leaders on work systems and processes.
- Collate and record time accurate information on traffic performance utilising operations graphs, IRS, and R.A.M.S.
- Implement a V/Line emergency and crisis management plan in response to incidents.
- Issue and manage track occupations and warrants in accordance with V/Line policy.
- All accidents/incidents are reported and recorded for investigations.
Training Program
V/Line offer a 10-week training program to ensure individuals are equipped to take on the responsibility of the Train Controller position Level 4, it is a requirement to successfully complete the training to progress to a qualified Train Controller. The next training class will commence 2 February 2026
Location & Travel Considerations
Given the critical, hands-on nature of the work, this is an onsite-only position based in Melbourne CBD. Due to fatigue management considerations, candidates are required to reside within 1 hour travel of Melbourne CBD / 60Kms of Melbourne CBD
About you
This position will suit a detail-oriented operator with strong analytical and problem-solving skills. You will have the opportunity to thrive in time-sensitive environments and make quick, accurate decisions under pressure. You need to bring excellent communication and reasoning skills to every task.

- Live within 1 hour travel of Melbourne CBD / 60Kms
- Able to commit to a 24/7 rotating roster including weekends + public holidays

Remuneration for this position will be in line with the V/Line Rail Operations and Administrative Employees Agreement 2023 TRAINEE TRAIN CONTROLLER $51.2999 per hour + 5 weeks annual leave, 20% Loading. Once Qualified individuals will move to a L4 Train Controller, $63.0585 per hour
