  • Inclusive & Diverse Workplace: Recognized by WORK180 as an employer of choice, V/Line encourages applications from women as per the Special Measures provision of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010.
  • Comprehensive Fully-Paid Training: Begin an exciting new career with nationally recognised qualifications, ongoing support, and a focus on safety.
  • Classes Commencing Every 6 weeks: Join a new cohort throughout 2026 and into 2027 to meet the growing demands of Victoria’s rail network.

ABOUT US

V/Line’s purpose is to connect Victorians through safe, reliable, and accessible transport. We believe in giving all Victorians opportunities through travel and transport – connecting them to jobs, education, family and friends, services, tourism and trade.

V/Line is experiencing significant growth and we’re delivering more services, more trains, cheaper fares, and huge projects. With more than 3700 weekly train and coach services, an expansive freight network and unprecedented rail investment, millions of Victorians depend on us to deliver. You could be one of our 3100 committed team members who are up to the challenge.

We’re dedicated to fostering a safe, inclusive, and collaborative workplace where everyone’s contributions are valued. We invite people from all backgrounds to consider train driving as a rewarding career path that offers ongoing growth and development.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Train Drivers play a critical role in delivering safe, timely, and reliable service across Victoria’s growing rail network. This position involves managing complex machinery, strict adherence to operational standards, and a strong commitment to passenger and public safety.

For more information on the day in the life of our Drivers, view this video of Stephanie

This role involves shift work both throughout training and after, this includes early mornings, late nights, weekends, and public holidays. Applicants should be prepared for the unique demands of train driving and understand that this is a responsibility-focused role requiring strict adherence to safety protocols.

We are thrilled to open the next round of applications for our Train Driver Entry Program, with classes commencing throughout 2026 and 2027. If you identify as a woman, please apply. We’ll give you priority consideration, as per the Special Measures provision of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010.

The role offers a combination of theoretical, simulated, and hands-on training, culminating in a Certificate IV in Train Driving.

Applications close: Tuesday, 17th February 2026, be aware that application screening and assessments will commence after this date. No screening will occur during the application window.

THE TRAINING PROGRAM

Our rigorous, structured training program covers all essential skills and knowledge areas, including rail signalling, train handling, safety protocols, and route familiarisation. The program is split into:

  • Classroom Learning: You’ll engage in foundational classes covering rail safety, operational rules, and the principles of train driving.
  • Simulated Training: Simulation exercises will prepare you for real-world scenarios, allowing you to apply safety protocols and make effective decisions in a controlled environment.
  • Practical Training with Driver Trainers: Practical components include hands-on learning alongside an experienced driver trainer, where you will gradually gain the skills and confidence required for independent driving.
  • Building Resilience and Preparedness: Train driving is a rewarding career, but it also comes with its share of challenges. The training program prepares you to handle difficult scenarios, including unexpected delays, severe weather, and other demanding situations that require strong problem-solving skills and resilience. This training is designed not only to develop technical expertise but also to foster the mental and emotional resilience needed to respond to real-world events with confidence and professionalism.

In addition to the metropolitan-based training, trainees will participate in regional stays of 2-4 weeks each to gain valuable hands-on experience within the diverse communities V/Line serves. Accommodation is provided during these stays, allowing you to immerse yourself in various regions and networks across Victoria.

ABOUT YOU

We’re looking for individuals who are:

  • Safety-Focused: With a commitment to upholding V/Line’s high standards of safety, you understand the importance of strict adherence to protocols and procedures.
  • Eager to Learn: Train driving requires a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills. We seek motivated individuals willing to dedicate study hours each week to achieve competency across all training modules.
  • Effective Communicators: Clear, concise communication is essential in rail operations, both during your training and on the job.
  • Aligned with V/Line Values: Our values—responsiveness, integrity, accountability, respect, and leadership—are central to everything we do.

No prior experience in transportation is necessary, but you must be at least 21 upon training completion and hold a full Australian driver’s license.

Our recruitment process includes multiple stages with various assessment tasks including cognitive, safety and psychometric assessments in addition to an online and in-person interview.

ABOUT THE TEAM

Our team of Train Drivers reflects a diverse range of ages, backgrounds, and life experiences, united by a shared commitment to safety and operational excellence. Although train driving can be solitary, our drivers build strong connections with colleagues through training and at their home depot, sharing insights and supporting one another.

Being part of V/Line means joining a community that values mutual respect and teamwork. You’ll have access to mentorship, ongoing learning, and pathways for career advancement, including opportunities to become a trainer, supervisor, or even progress into driver compliance after two years in the role.
