As we continue to invest in our network and deliver essential rail services, we’re looking for an experienced Assistant Track Protection Manager to join our People & Safety Division.
This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced TFPC to step into a leadership role and help shape the future of safe rail operations across the V/Line CBD network.
About the role
As the Assistant Track Protection Manager, you will play a key role in overseeing the planning, execution, and coordination of rail safety for activities on track. This position is primarily associated with Maintenance (NDAM), interfacing with renewal projects, major works and third party projects within the Vline CBD Network.
You’ll lead a team of internal and external protection staff, ensuring compliance to VLINEs Work on Track rules& Operating Procedures. This role is hands‑on, combining field‑based supervision with coaching, mentoring, and assurance activities.
Key Accountabilities include but are not limited to:
- Oversee a team of six (6) internal Track Force Protection Coordinators. Provide supervision, coaching and mentoring to both internal and external Track Protection staff in order to ensure that track protection processes are adhered to.
- Drafting of Agreed Protection Plans, including Worksite Protection Plans / Train Notices for adjacent AROs (ARTC & MTM).
- Assist with the development and implementation of processes and procedures for rail safety improvements.
- Liaise with external track protection providers in order to procure adequate resources to ensure planned track protection arrangements are implemented.
- Fulfil Track Protection duties in the field as well as assist with directing and supervising internal and external Track Protection personnel.
- Ensure that working environments are established and maintained that provide for the safety and wellbeing of staff, the community, customers, rolling stock and the infrastructure.
- Ensure environmental management plans are implemented.
- Assist in providing assurance that relevant ‘work on track’ rules and procedures are followed and adhered to.
- Undertake site surveillance and take safety to the field by mentoring and coaching all parties.
- Conduct Tool-Box talks on Track Protection recommendations as required.
- Undertake site safety inspections/audits and prepare recommendations and reports.
- Conduct inductions and verify competencies.
- Ensuring appropriate resources are allocated to Track Protection tasks
- Lead or support workplace investigations when required

To be considered for entry into the selection process for this role, applicants must meet the following 'key selection criteria' which forms part of our merit-based recruitment process:
- Current TFPC 3.2 or 3.3 competency
- Minimum 3+ years’ experience at a supervisory TFPC level
- Demonstrated experience managing Absolute Occupations in Melbourne’s Inner Suburban Area
- Strong knowledge of Work on Track rules and Operating Procedures
- Proven ability to supervise and mentor staff
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
- High attention to detail and the ability to work under pressure
