Data Network Specialist
· Real impact on safe and reliable train operations
· Recognised by WORK180 as an employer of choice for women
· Ongoing role based in the central CBD location
V/Line’s purpose is to connect Victorians through safe, reliable, and accessible transport. We believe in giving all Victorians opportunities through travel and transport – connecting them to jobs, education, family and friends, services, tourism and trade.
V/Line is experiencing significant growth and we’re delivering more services, more trains, cheaper fares, and huge projects. With more than 3700 weekly train and coach services, an expansive freight network and unprecedented rail investment, millions of Victorians depend on us to deliver. You could be one of our 3100 committed team members who are up to the challenge.
About the role
You’ll play an important part in maintaining the operational system networks that keep Victoria’s train control and signalling running safely and smoothly, including firmware and configuration updates, daily network operations and proactive issue resolution. You’ll strengthen network visibility, respond to alarms and system failures, and ensure the Operational Technology data network aligns to cyber security standards, with opportunities to jump on site when needed to gain hands on involvement in keeping critical systems running smoothly. Participation in pre‑planned overtime happens once or twice a month, with some scheduled project work across the year.
Key accountabilities include:
· Manage configuration of network equipment to maximise performance (firewalls, routers, switches, servers).
· Plan and deliver firmware upgrades across OT environments.
· Oversee day‑to‑day network operations and provide the right support when issues arise.
· Review and action alarms and system failures; lead investigations into faults.
· Implement improvements that strengthen network visibility and monitoring.
· Maintain and endorse OT data network architecture and topology for operational service.
· Manage IP addressing schema and registers, and develop procedures and work instructions.
· Configure and manage firewalls; apply device hardening and configuration management.
· Monitor, detect and respond to network intrusion; share performance updates with stakeholders.
· Coordinate procurement and configuration of equipment, including working with external vendors.
· Maintain accurate asset records, drawings and documentation for signalling communications.
· Provide on‑site support across the rail corridor, equipment rooms, depots and stations.
This is a site‑based role, with time spent in the office and across operational locations as needed.
About you
You’re someone who enjoys practical, meaningful work in an operational environment and feels confident stepping in to solve issues directly. You bring hands‑on network configuration experience, ideally in rail or other operational systems and feel comfortable being on site when needed. You hold (or are working towards) Cisco certifications, are open to some occasional travel, and are happy working on site five days a week with pre‑planned overtime scheduled in advance.
Our ideal candidate will possess the following:
· Industry‑recognised network certifications (e.g., CCNA/CCNP, CompTIA Network+/Security+, GIAC) or progressing towards them.
· Diploma (or equivalent) in IT/Networking, Computer Networking, or Computer Systems and Networks.
· Proven experience across switching, routing and core network services within OT or control systems, ideally supporting train control or signalling.
· Demonstrated experience working with internal business customers in managing or supporting a data network infrastructure.
· Capability across AAA, firewall configuration, device hardening, firmware and configuration management, and network monitoring.
· Ability to interpret and maintain network architecture, topology and documentation, and accept assets into operational service.
· A collaborative communicator who builds trust, shares knowledge and works safely in a rail environment.
· Hold a current Driver’s Licence.
Desirable:
· Level 1 Rail Safety Awareness
· A degree in Computer Science, Engineering (Computer and Network), Computer Systems and Networks, Technology or Network Security Management.
If your skills or experience don’t exactly match our listed requirements, we still encourage you to apply. We value diverse perspectives and believe in the potential for growth and development.
