Senior Power Systems Engineer – Perth Office – Permanent Full Time

Western Australia operates one of the most complex power systems in the world. As large-scale renewables evolve and generation sources transition, we’re addressing increasingly complex challenges in system strength, stability, and network capability.

We’re looking for a Senior Power Systems Engineer to play a key technical role in shaping how WA’s transmission network evolves to support large-scale electrification, new generation connections, and a rapidly changing power system.

Your Role in Action

This is a senior technical role at the centre of complex system challenges. You’ll lead high-impact power system studies and translate them into practical network decisions that influence connection outcomes, system limits, and long-term planning direction.

You’ll work across planning, operations and external stakeholders—bringing clarity to technically complex, often competing, system requirements.

  • Lead advanced power system studies across steady-state, dynamic (RMS) and electromagnetic transient (EMT) domains.

  • Assess system strength, stability, and network capability impacts of new and existing connections.

  • Develop and maintain network models (PowerFactory and/or PSCAD), including generator and load dynamic models.

  • Provide technical advice on large generator and customer connections, balancing system capability with project delivery expectations.

  • Investigate system performance and incidents, working with generators and customers to optimise control system settings.

  • Contribute to network development strategies, business cases and planning decisions that shape future transmission capability.

  • Partner with internal teams and external stakeholders to navigate complex technical and commercial consideration.

What Makes You a Great Fit

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).

  • At least 9 years relevant experience with broad and extensive technical expertise.

  • Demonstrated technical experience covering the following areas:

  • Planning, design, operation and maintenance of electricity transmission networks;

  • Transmission system plant and its application, including the planning criteria, specifications and design requirements.

  • Large generation and load connection studies including assessment of dynamic behaviour, control system assessments and tuning of parameters.

  • Modelling requirements for performing transmission network power system studies, including proficiency in dynamic and load flow studies using PowerFactory.

  • Knowledge of specialist studies in rotor angle, small signal, frequency, voltage stability, electromagnetic transients, and corona.

  • Economic and financial evaluation techniques.

  • Eligible for CPEng/NPER registration.

  • Well-developed written, verbal and presentation / communications skills coupled with strong understanding of economic and financial evaluation techniques.

  • Familiarity with energy markets, regulatory frameworks, and transmission network power system study requirements.

Why This Role & Western Power

By joining Western Power, you will contribute to powering a cleaner energy future. We are dedicated to fostering career development and promoting a healthy work-life balance, empowering you to drive innovation as we develop a network that will serve the Western Australian community for generations. You will also benefit from a range of perks and opportunities, including:

  • Work on one of Australia’s most technically unique power systems, with high penetration of renewables and isolated system constraints.

  • Directly influence network limits, connection outcomes, and long-term transmission planning decisions.

  • Exposure to complex large-scale generator and customer connections, including renewable and electrification projects.

  • Deepen your expertise across dynamic modelling, system strength and EMT studies in a highly specialised environment.

  • Play a visible role in powering WA’s energy transition and decarbonisation pathway.

Alongside this, you’ll be supported with:

  • Clear technical and leadership progression pathways, with structured development opportunities to grow into Principal, technical specialist or leadership roles.

  • Access to salary packaging, discounted health insurance and wellbeing initiatives.

  • A strong internal mobility culture, with significant opportunities for career progression across the business.
