We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Project Development Engineer at our Head Office, on a permanent full-time basis.


About this role

As a Senior Project Development Engineer, you will drive all aspects of the planning and scoping phases for network projects with your in-depth engineering expertise and knowledge. Network driven projects are becoming more varied to support our vision towards a clean energy future and you will play a key role to influence and challenge technical solutions.

Ultimately your work culminates in the development of investment proposals (business case) which addresses all strategic, financial, technical, market and regulatory considerations ensuring the business makes informed, documented investment decisions, in line with Western Power’s Corporate Strategy. You will have the opportunity to work with various stakeholders, including presenting investment proposals to senior decision makers.

Specific activities of the role include:

  • Coordinate and lead Joint Planning Teams and provide technical input into the options analysis and scope development.
  • Demonstrate a collaborative approach to decision making.
  • Develop and collate robust and detailed documentation to support investment decisions.
  • Analyse and assess technical solutions to planning problems, including costing of feasible options.
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure effective and timely framing of decisions and/or contracts relating to complex network and major customer connections and line relocations.
  • Ensure appropriate and robust commercial solutions having regard to risk implications and all engineering requirements.
  • Be responsible and accountable for the production and management of accurate capital budget requirements associated with complex projects.
  • Appropriate escalation of issues within the area.
  • Production of concise and rigorous business cases to support customer applications or network solutions.
  • Apply a balanced approach to all issues affecting Grid Transformation. Issues are generally complex and rarely have one solution for all situations. You must be able to think and act broadly across the issues faced.
  • Ensure all systems are kept up to date and accurate as required to reflect project status, financial information, and customer relationship.
  • Apply the Regulatory and Technical rules, policies and guidelines to customer driven and network investments and planning criteria.
  • Provide high quality data and forecasts with respect to investment proposals.
  • Develop, lead and support innovation and continuous improvement initiatives within the Function.
  • Provide mentoring to graduate engineers.


About you

We are seeking someone with experience and attributes that include:

  • Degree Qualification in Engineering (Electrical) – essential
  • Eligibility to CPEng status by Engineers Australia - essential
  • At least 9 + years relevant broad and extensive knowledge and engineering / project expertise with demonstrated technical experience covering the following areas:
    • Planning, design, operation and maintenance of electricity transmission and / or distribution networks;
    • Economic and financial evaluation techniques;
  • Knowledge of performing load flow and dynamics studies in Powerfactory or equivalent software packages.
  • Well-developed written, verbal and presentation / communications skills
  • Sound knowledge of business practices and policies as appropriate
  • The ability to apply a balanced approach to all issues faced which are complex and rarely have one solution. The incumbent must be able to think and act broadly across the issues faced
