About The Role
Due to business growth, Whitehaven Coal has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Senior Tax Adviser to join our Group Tax team based in our Brisbane office. The role requires a good level of tax compliance experience in Australian taxes, with a focus on corporate income tax, Goods and Services Tax (GST), Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT), and Fuel Tax Credits (FTC), with a working knowledge of transfer pricing, employment taxes (such as payroll taxes, superannuation guarantee, and Pay As You Go (PAYG) withholding), mining royalties, transfer pricing, and withholding taxes.
What You’ll Do
- Preparation of income tax returns for members of the Whitehaven Coal group.
- Assist with the preparation of income tax provisions and effective tax rate matters.
- Maintenance of tax fixed asset registers.
- Assist with the preparation of the group’s FBT returns.
- Preparation or review of Business Activity Statements (BAS) for group entities.
- Preparation or review of FTC claims.
- Preparation or review of coal royalty returns.
- Review of payroll tax returns.
- Assist with tax budgets and forecasting processes.
- Provide advice on day-to-day tax matters, looking at consistency across the Whitehaven Coal Group.
- Assist with tax “health checks” of the Whitehaven Coal operations.
- Assist with the review and updating of tax systems, procedures, and policies.
- Assist with ensuring contemporaneous evidence is maintained of compliance with tax policies and procedures.
What You’ll Bring
- Relevant tertiary degree.
- Chartered Tax Adviser, Chartered Accountant, or Certified Practising Accountant.
- A working knowledge of the mining industry (and specifically coal) is an advantage.
- Medium level working knowledge of the Australian income tax, GST, FTC, and FBT legislation
- General knowledge of payroll taxes, stamp duties, and coal royalties in New South Wales and Queensland, superannuation guarantee, PAYG withholding, and mining royalties.
- Experience with extracting data from accounting systems such as SAP.
- Ability to analyse a range of information to extract the pertinent facts and perform sound tax analysis thereof.
- Good technical accounting skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team.
- Demonstrated high-level skills in the use of spreadsheets and other computer applications for analysis and reporting.
- Efficient work practices and good time management abilities.
- Good communication skills – both written and verbal.
