The Role
WooliesX are seeking a Data Platform Engineer to join the squads in The WoolliesX Tec Foundation Tribe. The tribe primarily focuses on the various Data systems and platforms focusing on how data is to be effectively and consistently stored, captured, curated, integrated and secured across the WooliesX ecosystemthat make picking, delivery and collection of all orders from our e-Commerce & Rewards channels (web and mobile app). Data Platform Engineer's will work across multiple squads (scrum teams) each with of 3-5 engineers, a Product Manager, BA and QA/test engineers to uplift the online platform that powers Australia’s leading supermarket with significant growth plans. Data Platform Engineer's are involved in requirements definition, design, development, deployment, maintenance and enhancement of applications working as part of development teams, with a specific focus on databases. They work with developers optimising database operations, review code and implement improvements and help upskill team members on database skills. Data Platform Engineer's also support production environments at an application level, making sure databases are optimised and get involved in production incidents when they are database related. There is an on call-component for this role shared across Application DBAs and offshore DBA Support who provide the first level of support.

Key areas of responsibility

  • Database/Repository Design.
  • Service Management, Service Operation, Database Administration.
  • Work collaboratively with the Engineering Team, QA, Product Owners and BAs.
  • Database development across squads, design solutions and implement optimisations.
  • Review developer T-SQL outputs, ensuring high performance and best practices from the teams. Help the developers write complex queries in an optimised manner. Share common patterns/tips and tricks used in the industry to solve similar problems.
  • Coach, mentor and help the engineers on the team to improve their database skills.
  • Write documentation for processes and procedures (creating KBs, runbooks, topology, etc.).
  • Provide production application-level DBA support (Level 3). Work on urgent incidents resolution, participate in post-incident reviews and provide long- term solutions to problems identified.
  • Work with infrastructure/ DevOps Engineers and Support DBAs to transfer knowledge across the organisation.
  • Proactively identify areas of improvement (design, performance, etc.) and implement changes as part of a squad (scrum team) outputs.
  • Setup SQL server environments for development, QA and performance testing. Configure the servers and databases based on the requirement and company policies.
  • Help manage the organisation’s database technology and associated schemas to allow secure, efficient and effective access to the data.
  • Plan and work with support teams to implement regular system upgrades and ensure alignment across development, test, PT and production environments.
  • Help design and establish best practices for disaster recovery in Production.
  • Ensure effective access to data and information assets whilst maintaining the requirements of security, privacy and confidentiality.


Skills Required

  • Ability to stay calm in challenging circumstances and work through problems methodically.

  • Good understanding of Agile & Lean delivery principles. Provide input to team processes.
  • Excellent communications skills, ability to reach out to others naturally and proactively.
  • Experience working closely with or within development teams as well as managing and maintaining production environments.
  • Extensive demonstrable enterprise-level (5+ years) experience in database development and support in MS SQL Server Enterprise environments.
  • Superb MS SQL Server experience including performance optimisation in high-availability environments, ideally within Azure.
  • Ability to write and troubleshoot SQL Code and design (stored procs, functions, tables, views, triggers, indexes, constraints).
  • Strong knowledge of backups, restores, recovery models, database shrink operations, DBCC commands, clustering, database mirroring, replication.
  • Expert experience in implementing operational automation.
  • Strong knowledge of how indexes, index management, integrity checks, configuration, patching. How statistics work, how indexes are stored, how they can be created and managed effectively.
  • Ability to detect and troubleshoot SQL Server related CPU, memory, I/O, disk space and other resource contention.
  • Experience in troubleshooting and resolving database integrity issues, performance issues, blocking and deadlocking issues, query plan pinning,
  • tuning database queries, replication issues, log shipping issues, connectivity and network issues, security issues, etc.
  • Database performance optimisation (Infrastructure level + TSQL) and troubleshooting
  • Experience with NoSQL databases (document databases, table storage,
  • MongoDB etc.).
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure (IaaS and PaaS) or alternatively GCP (we use Azure).
  • Experience in DevOps automation would be a plus.
