Our Purpose
At Yarra Trams, we’re not just moving people — we’re moving Melbourne. Your journey is our passion, and it drives everything we do. From the tracks to the teams behind them, we’re committed to delivering world-class service — and it all starts with passionate people like you.
We’re looking for a Finance Business Partner, Projects to join our Commercial & Finance team at Tram Hub. You’ll own financial reporting and control across the Projects portfolio, provide independent advice to leadership and develop the Finance Analyst while improving how the team works.
About the role:
Reporting to the Head of Commercial & Finance, Projects, you will:
- Own portfolio budgets, forecasts and management reporting; challenge project inputs and provide clear recommendations on financial performance, risk and cash flow.
- Lead month-end and financial controls, including revenue recognition, work in progress (WIP), reconciliations and recoverability assessments.
- Oversee Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) claims, labour rates and cost recovery, working with the Finance Analyst and Commercial team to resolve issues.
- Own Shared Direct Costs (SDC) budgets, forecasts and reconciliations, including efficiency-sharing calculations and reporting to DTP.
- Lead and develop the Finance Analyst, drive workstreams through to completion and maintain documented processes and backup capability for business continuity.
- Initiate and deliver improvements using approved AI, analytics and automation, validating outputs and retaining accountability for financial judgements.
About You:
You’re a hands-on finance partner who takes responsibility for outcomes and constructively challenges assumptions. Experience in infrastructure, transport or government-funded projects is desirable. You’ll bring:
- A degree in Accounting, Finance or Commerce, with CA/CPA qualification or a recognised equivalent.
- Strong finance business partnering, management accounting and project finance experience, with independent ownership of forecasts, reporting, month-end and financial controls.
- Sound commercial judgement and financial modelling skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders and turn analysis into practical recommendations.
- Initiative and reliable delivery: you manage competing deadlines, resolve issues independently and escalate risks early with proposed solutions.
- The ability to coach and develop others, delegate effectively and maintain clear priorities and quality standards.
- Strong Excel and hands-on financial systems skills, with demonstrated improvements using analytics, automation or responsible AI. Adaptive or Smartsheet experience is desirable.
About our Recruitment Process:
After your initial application, here’s what to expect.
- Review: We review and shortlist applications as they arrive, and we may progress strong candidates before the campaign closes. While most applications are assessed after the closing date, early applicants who closely match the role requirements may be contacted sooner. Every application is reviewed first by our Talent Acquisition team and then by the relevant Hiring Manager to ensure a consistent and thorough evaluation.
- Interview: Our interviews are the best way for us to get to know you and determine your fit for the role through questions focused on your behaviours, skills and experiences. Our preference is to meet you face to face but we’re also happy to accommodate virtual interviews to suit your circumstances
- Background & pre-employment checks: If you’re the preferred candidate we’ll ask you to go through a series of background checks, including references, working rights, drug & alcohol and medical checks which are standard for all positions within Yarra Trams
- Offer: Once we’ve had conversations around salary and notice periods, your offer will be extended to you via a secure online platform for your review and acceptance. We’ll then also be in touch with you as you go through Onboarding and your commencement
