About the Role (Job Description)
Reporting into the Asset President, Nickel West and leading a significant team (7 direct reports and ~1000 indirect employee reports, plus ~400 indirect contractor reports), the General Manager Mining is accountable for the NiW Mining Operations across Mt Keith, and Leinster. This is a critical leadership role optimizing Asset productivity and securing the long-life future of Nickel West.
A key member of the Nickel West Asset Leadership Team, the General Manager Mining is responsible for:
- A safe system of work to protect the health and safety of people and the environment in accordance with statutory and BHP requirements
- A culture in which engagement, inclusion and diversity thrive, so that everyone is motivated and supported to realise their full potential
- Operating performance targets together with plans that demonstrate how these will be achieved through the Corporate Alignment Planning (CAP) processes
- Continuous improvement through the disciplined application of the BHP Operating System, and its standards, processes, systems and structures
- A capital program that maximises shareholder returns, and complies with the capital approvals process
- Safeguarding and enhancing the standing and reputation of BHP especially to our host communities
The areas the General Manager Mining will oversee are:
- Multiple open pits with a total of 100+ Mtpa material movement via 600/400t excavators and 220t truck fleet (owner operated)
- Small (600ktpa ore) underground long hole open stopping mine (owner operated)
- Large underground mining complex with multiple orebodies and mining methods: Block Cave, Sub Level Cave, Sub-Level Open Stoping (Owner operated)
- Villages and Airports at each site with owners for maintenance and contractor for operations
This is a global search with the role based residentially in Leinster, Western Australia or FiFo from Perth, Australia.
About You (Skills & Qualifications)
You bring extensive mining technical knowledge in geology, geotechnical and mining operations cultivated through years of experience across various locations/commodity types. In this role, you will build strong relationships through effective communication and consultation; shaping the culture across the Nickel West mine locations to ensure a safe, productive, sustainable and disciplined approach to work focused on continuous improvement. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate their ability to develop and work within team-centric delivery mechanisms holding to the highest values of integrity, care for others and psychological safe teams.
You will be strategic thinker with the ability to focus and prioritize critical deliverables to provide clear direction, with many competing priorities concurrently. The successful candidate will be sharp in making sound judgement, leveraging from relevant experience and working effectively within complexity.

Requirements
Minimum requirements that candidates will bring are:
- Minimum of 15 years of experience in mine leadership, or asset operations from Nickel or similar commodities
- Tertiary degree in Mining, Geoscience, or similar required; Advanced degree preferred
- Experience in Large Open Pits and Underground mines
- Strong mining technical knowledge in geology, geotechnical and mining operations
- Strong exposure and experience in maintenance of mobile equipment
- Project execution experience on mining and / or infrastructure projects
- Proven experience of building and leading a high performing culture and inclusive teams in separated geographic zones in the resource extraction, engineering, maintenance or mine operations space
- Demonstrated confidence in Safety Leadership and holding yourself and others accountable
- The ability to develop strategy, and align stakeholders and cross-functional teams to drive performance through operating discipline to achieve great results
- Experience in influencing in all directions through working with peers, Functions, regulatory authorities, and third party or external stakeholders
- WA 1st Class Mine Managers Certificate of Competency preferred
Accountabilities
Key accountabilities in this role are to:
- Deliver a safe system of work. Keep our people safe, injury free and healthy by enabling our Step-up Culture, Charter Values, and Code of Business Conduct. As both a Risk Owner and next up manager to many risk owners, be responsible and accountable to ensure that critical controls are managed and material risk is maintained in a well-controlled state across the Nickel West mines (open pit and underground) in Mt Keith, Leinster, and Cliffs.

- Maintain a performance management system to monitor and control the availability utilization rate to provide a stable and predictable operation. Strive for zero breakdowns and zero unplanned downtime through proactive defect elimination and lifecycle asset management
- Lead with business acumen and understand capital management; collaborate with other operations in the Asset to ensure capital is managed and prioritized for the optimal ROI
- Demonstrate an understanding of asset production supply chain and operation level flow optimisation; mastering the Corporate Alignment Planning process
