Planning and development of the network is undertaken on a cyclical and needs basis to ensure that transmission service delivery to customers is cost-effective, environmentally responsible, responsive to changing requirements and meets the jurisdictional, contractual and National Electricity Rule (NER) obligations.
The Opportunity
Are you an expert in Power System Analysis and passionate about contributing to the Australia’s energy transformation?
Transgrid currently has a vacancy for a Principal Engineer to join us in achieving all of the above. As a Principal Engineer, you will be responsible for taking a leading role in the modelling, analysis, and provision of recommendations for new generator connections to the high voltage transmission system. Working across the Network business unit, you will develop network models, perform detailed analysis, streamline processes for efficient power systems analysis and author or review technical reports. You will assess the impact of generator connections to the network and work closely with internal and external stakeholders to develop and implement innovative solutions to generator and system performance issues.
In the role of the Principal Engineer you will:
- Lead generator connection projects and provide expert advice with a particular focus on power system analysis and application of NER requirements
- Form or review advice and recommendations on various technical enquiries and analysis
- Provide technical leadership and mentoring support to team members.
- Author or review concise and clear reports including reference documentation and provides presentations to stakeholders
- Provide management timely and accurate briefings
- Lead the review of Power Systems Analysis processes, policies and guidelines to achieve improved team performance
- Lead options analysis and document network and non-network solutions for transmission system issues both technically and commercially
- Lead the development and documentation of technical analysis methodologies and model development
- Manage planning and system data to support analysis
- Develop or review scripts or applications in the Python language
- Keep abreast of changes in the National Electricity Market and relevant legislation and its impact on operations of the NSW HV network and Transgrid’s business
- Exemplifies collaborative behaviours to ensure stakeholder requirements are included
- Engaging and leading discussions/negotiations with project stakeholders including AEMO
- Building long lasting relationships with industry groups and representing Transgrid in industry forums
- This position is required to act in the respective functional Manager’s position for extended periods and to provide leadership to the team as required.
Skills & Experience
What we expect from you:
- Tertiary qualifications at degree level in an appropriate discipline with Electrical Engineering degree being the most relevant
- Extensive experience in the analysis and development of electricity transmission systems
- Effective communicator with the aptitude to articulate complex technical issues to different stakeholders including customers, suppliers, contractors, other technical experts and senior management (written and verbal)
- Demonstrated experience in leading technical assessments associated with generator connection projects
- Expert user of PSCAD, PSS/E and/or PowerFactory
- Experience in python scripting and automation of power system analysis tools is highly regarded
- Substantial experience in the legislation including the NER and technical standards guiding system planning and generator connections
- Comprehensive understanding of risk management – qualitative and quantitative
- Extensive knowledge of national and international planning standards and practices
- Excellent knowledge of electrical networks engineering and operations
- Well-developed people and service management skills
- Excellent written communications skills for persuasive reports and submissions
- Well-developed analytical, conceptual and problem solving skills
- Skills and performance in change management
- Proven knowledge of the National Electricity Market and its impact on operations of the NSW HV network and Transgrid’s business
- Knowledge of the energy industry
- Knowledge of quality assurance principles and experience with working in accordance with a Quality Assurance System
