The Opportunity
Reporting to the Health and Safety Manager the Health and Safety function exists to deliver value to South 32 through the design, maintenance and implementation of South32 systems of management for health & safety, including standards, business processes, procedures and tools that support effective risk mitigation and sustainability performance across the business. We provide SME advice across health, safety and hygiene matters to the South32 operational, functional and major projects.
This role provides health management subject matter expertise across the South32 business to:
enable the business to adhere to the global Health Standard
enable effective case management for occupational injuries and illness
establish a group wellness process
support legal compliance and material-risk mitigation at the operational level
mitigate business level material risks through the identification and delivery of strategic improvements projects in collaboration with operation-based teams and other functions where relevant
Accountabilities
provide technical (SME) advice on material health matters to management, functional and operational teams across multiple geographic locations to support compliance with regulatory requirements, health approvals and internal company standards
influence the strategic direction of the broader business with respect to health and wellness management to reduce long-term risk exposure and promote enduring health outcomes
provide input into the design of the global Health Standard, and develop processes that support the effective case management and implementation of wellness programs across the business
remain updated on new or changing health regulatory requirements and update the health standard, systems and processes accordingly
engage in external forums to discuss emerging industry wide health issues/opportunities and guide policy direction (government and industry-based) where relevant to the South32 business
monitor changes to legislative frameworks and industry standards relative to the discipline area/s, and instigate change management processes where required
identify and manage the portfolio of strategic improvement projects (relevant to occupational injury and illness management and wellness) that support the delivery of the South32 business plan/s and functional objectives
provide 2nd line stewardship over the South32 risk profile, internal company standards and health approvals/authorisations and work with the operations to close-out the identified gaps
Manage the implementation of the Health assurance program, to ensure:
Compliance with South32 Health standard, systems, processes for Health / Safety work
Compliance with Health statutory requirements
Health material risk critical controls are effective including reviews of Health / Safety events
Provide feedback to the HSE Operations and Operations teams highlighting gaps or issues identified from the Health assurance program, including guidance on how to rectify the identified issues.
support South32 reporting processes in relation to health management activities and initiatives
Co-create the company wide goals and targets for Health, including Short-Term Incentives for Remuneration

About you
Detailed (SME) knowledge of occupational health management processes and technologies, relevant industry standards (eg. ICMM) and regulatory requirements across the Australia, Colombian and South Africa jurisdictions
Sound knowledge of occupational injury and illness management
Experience in establishing group level wellness programs
Demonstrated ability to Influence decisions and performance at both the operational and management level through effective written and verbal communication
Ability to influence and gain the trust of an Executive leadership team
Track record in leading change initiatives in a diverse business setting
Flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing business needs and circumstances
Well-developed communication, interpersonal, negotiation and facilitation skills
Excellent skills in managing time, setting priorities, planning, and organizing
Strong internal and external customer service focus
Capable of working with minimal supervision and able to self-manage priorities
Specific work experience:
site based health position (min 3 years)
previous experience in a corporate/ group role
experience in the mining industry preferred
Requires detailed knowledge of key concepts, theories and practices related to the effective management of health-related risks.
Demonstrated experience in executing technical health related work
Participation in accident investigations with sound knowledge of the process involved
Sound report writing skills, including input into preparing reports for the Board.
