The Opportunity
Reporting to the Improvement & Operating System Lead, the Principal Improvement and Operating System delivers value to South32 through continuously improving and governing the South32 Improvement Operating Model and the South32 Operating System (OS) across Operations.
The purpose of this role is to lead and support Operational Business Improvement teams in embedding the South32 Improvement Operating Model and providing capability uplift in the achievement of Business Improvement mandates including Operating System, Business Planning Alignment, Business Intelligence and Analytics, Full Potential and Improvement Pipeline Management, Frontline Empowerment, Improvement Project Management and Improvement & Technical Capability Building.
Accountabilities
- Lead the continuous improvement of the South32 Improvement Operating Model. Work in collaboration with operations improvement teams to embed and govern global improvement processes, systems, performance metrics and capabilities. Acts as technical expert and coach for the Improvement Operating Model, educating, raising awareness and building knowledge
- Lead Improvement process work-cycles e.g., Full Potential & Improvement Pipeline, across Operations and relevant Functions, providing technical expertise and coaching to improvement teams. Monitors and reports common improvement productivity metrics, including the consolidation and reporting of South32’s improvement pipeline against each operation’s full potential and improvement target
- Leads the continuous improvement of the South32 Operating System. Works in collaboration with Operations OS Leads to embed the Operating System Strategy including design reviews, verification coaching and gap closure, leadership engagement and capability uplift. Acts as a technical expert and coach for the Operating System, educating, raising awareness and building knowledge
- Global process owner for assigned Improvement and Operating System processes and manages the life cycle of related standards, procedures, systems and tools
- Global product owner for core systems and business intelligence tools required to manage the South32 Operating System, Full Potential, and Improvement Pipeline
- Support development of common tools, training and systems that directly enable the South32 Improvement Operating Model and Operating System, as well as the integration of the OS with critical capabilities including Planning, Asset Management, Innovation, Improvement, Data Analytics and Technology
- Leads 2nd line stewardship activities including data analysis and reporting to support Improvement teams in managing Improvement and Operating System risks effectively
About You
- Experienced in leading and embedding global transformations related to Improvement and Business Operating Systems. Proven ability to empower others, inspire change and work collaboratively by instilling a sense of ownership and participation in change/improvements
- Strong technical knowledge of operating system practices in an operational environment such as operating model embedment, operating philosophies/value management, management operating systems (MOS)/planning optimisation, well-designed work, frontline empowerment, process improvement and improvement pipeline management
- Experienced in managing the health of Improvement Pipeline processes and systems including business diagnostics and improvement target setting, improvement pipeline development, delivery of improvement projects and benefits management
- Experience in evaluating improvement projects, monitoring, and reporting of benefits within Finance budgeting and forecasting processes and communicating value delivery with leaders and teams to energise a culture of continuous improvement
- Experience in problem solving methodologies such as Lean Six Sigma; change management methodologies such as Prosci/Kotter and project management principles, methodologies, and tools
- Strong written and verbal communications including demonstrated ability to present to senior leaders and engage/facilitate sessions with both functional and operational leaders, specialists, and teams
- Proven ability to coach, influence and train leaders, specialists, and frontline teams
- Proven ability to navigate and solve complex problems, work with ambiguity, and adapt to change/dynamic working environments
Qualifications
- Tertiary qualifications in STEM and/or business-related areas
- Lean Six Sigma certification (green belt minimum)
- Change management and program management qualifications (desirable)
- Coaching certification (desirable)
