Reporting to the Vice President Technical and HSE Stewardship this role provides the Health, Safety and Security (HSS) teams with leadership across the South32 business to:
- build capability within the HSS sub-function across the Operations and Functions
- design and deliver Stewardship(2nd line Assurance) across South32 HSS standards to ensure implementation risks are understood
- deliver ad hoc improvement HSS initiatives
- establish systems and processes that accurately report external and internal HSS information
- support HSS strategic site projects so that they effectively manage key HSS risks
- design fit for purpose HSS Standards
- establish systems and processes that deliver on organisational learning in the HSS area
Accountabilities
Primary responsibilities are to:
- design, lead and implement the Health and Safety stewardship which is instrumental to deliver our Breakthrough 1(we all guarantee everyone goes home safe and well), and driving the South32 Safety Improvement Initiatives which aims to move the company to be amongst the industry leaders in safety performance
- create and implement the HSS business plan and budget
- own the critical HSS business processes
- lead, coach and mentor HSS functional team members to deliver against objectives.
- strategic direction on HSS matters for the Group. Drives the consistent expectations, understanding and application of HSS processes across senior leadership
- monitor developments and trends in the external environment that relate to HSS and adapt the internal approach for Group as required
- provide technical support and advice to operational leaders on HSS matters
- create systems and processes to analyse, assure and accurately report on HSS and E information both externally and internally
- own the South32 Health, Safety and Security & Emergency Management Standards to ensure that the approaches have clarity of purpose and can be practically implemented.
- lead a Safety Transformation initiative group-wide and any other Group-wide HSS improvement programs
- lead a team of technical experts in Health, Security and Emergency Management.
- own the risk management implementation for the whole Technical function.
- provide input into the HSS strategic plan to ensure that the focus is on key HSS based risks
- support the operations to ensure that HSS initiatives align to their strategic needs
- verify HSS related risks and advise VP Operations and COO’s on improvement opportunities to effectively manage these
- provide operations with constructive feedback relating to site incidents and recommended actions
- manage the financial performance of the sub function
- create an inclusive workplace with a strong culture of care and accountability
- demonstrate an overriding commitment to health, safety, security responsibility and sustainable development
- develop sound working relationships based on trust
- facilitate learning across operations from external and internal events
About you
- Senior HSS leadership accountabilities with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in a relevant industry.
- Systems thinking
- Provide thought leadership on HSS related matters
- Requires knowledge of key concepts, theories and practices related to effective management of HSS related risks.
- Extensive industry line management experience in leading operational teams and processes for a minimum of 10 years
- Proven experience in establishing and maintaining effective business level HSS management systems, and delivery of strategy and strategic projects.
- Ability to influence operational teams (including senior management) based on operational leadership experience
- Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain sound working relationships (face to face and remote) with internal and external stakeholders including South32 senior executives
- Sound report writing skills
- Experienced in leading a serious accident investigation with sound knowledge of the process involved
- Track record in leading change initiatives in a diverse business setting
- Flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing business needs and circumstances
- Well-developed communication, interpersonal, negotiation and facilitation skills
- Excellent skills in managing time, setting priorities, planning, and organising
- Strong internal and external customer service focus
- 10 + years minimum experience at Manager or GM level within Operations, H& S or business improvement leading a team of professionals
