Charting new courses for women in port operations

Women in port operations

For a long time, port operations have been seen as physically demanding roles dominated by men. But the industry is evolving, and women like Holly Kunzer are not just joining the field, they’re thriving in it.

Holly began her career with Hutchison Ports UK just over a year ago, moving straight from university into the role of Terminal Planner at the Port of Felixstowe. Today, she helps coordinate vessel movements and influence quayside operations at the UK’s busiest container port. It’s a role that combines strategy, precision, and rapid decision-making, exactly the kind of challenge she enjoys.

“The unpredictable nature of the problem-solving is one of my favourite parts of the job,” she says. “It’s fast, it’s technical, and it keeps you thinking.”

Bringing a fresh perspective to a changing industry

Like many sectors, the maritime industry has historically had gender imbalances across technical and operational roles. But Holly has seen encouraging changes and Hutchison Ports UK is contributing to that shift.

“Shipping and ports have definitely been male-dominated for a long time, but things are changing. There are more women coming into different roles now, and you can feel the culture slowly shifting,” she shares.

She describes her own experience as overwhelmingly positive. With support from colleagues, visible career pathways, and opportunities to contribute from the start, Holly has felt empowered to succeed. She also recognises the importance of visibility in helping others see what’s possible.

“Every woman in this type of role makes it a bit easier for the next one coming through,” she says.

It’s not all heavy lifting

A common misconception about port careers is that they rely on physical strength. Holly’s role, however, is highly technical.

“In my role as a vessel planner, it’s all about using systems, solving problems, and making fast decisions to keep things moving,” she explains.

She’s found the work both dynamic and rewarding, and she’s eager for more people to understand the diversity of roles available in this environment. Hutchison Ports UK, she says, offers exciting opportunities for those ready to grow, no matter their background.

“I came straight from graduating university, and yes, it was daunting. But so many skills from other industries and education are transferable—organisation, communication, time management. The technical side can be learned.”

For anyone thinking of making a move

Holly encourages others considering the industry to be open to learning and seek out mentorship early. Her own confidence grew by asking questions, learning continuously, and showing a strong understanding of her role.

“Professionalism earns respect over time,” she says. “Support from mentors and colleagues has made a huge difference.”

She also sees the value in lifting others up, especially women entering the industry for the first time. For Holly, it’s all part of building a stronger, more inclusive culture that can support the industry’s future.

Your future could start here

Holly’s journey reflects what’s possible when a forward-looking company supports emerging professionals. With the right opportunities, she’s building a thriving career and helping shape a more inclusive future for port operations.
