Working for a company focused on improving its impact on the planet is rewarding in itself, but when you can build a successful career at the same time, surely that’s the dream!
Making mining more sustainable is at the heart of South32’s purpose. As Principal for Performance and Stewardship, Kathryn Turkovic Levey knows she’s making a difference daily.
“I’m passionate about creating meaningful impact and fostering strong, connected communities through sustainability networks. At South32, sustainability is not just a goal—it’s a core thread woven into every facet of the business. These values deeply resonate with me, inspiring my commitment to driving innovative, sustainable solutions that make a lasting difference.”
Kathryn discusses the changing landscape of mining at South32 and why the industry’s future has never looked more sustainable.
Changing the legacy of mining
South32 is dedicated to supporting the communities they’re part of – and the world we depend on. That’s why they’ve set ambitious targets for reducing their environmental footprint and investing positively in the societies they operate in, all while producing the materials needed for building a low-carbon future.
“I knew I’d made the right decision to join South32 the moment I received my welcome pack in the mail. It wasn’t just thoughtful—it showcased products made using the very commodities South32 mines, reflecting the company’s pride in its work and its forward-looking vision. It was a powerful reminder that I was stepping into an organization that’s not only great but truly aligned with its values and purpose.”
From ambitious local building projects to protecting biodiversity and taking steps towards a net zero emissions future, South32 is working – hard – towards change. In 2024 alone, they’ve invested an impressive USD 2.36 million in community projects around the globe.
Kathryn is so passionate about this aspect of her role that she even pursues it outside the workplace.
“I’m deeply passionate about giving back to the community and igniting meaningful change through sustainability. Beyond my professional role, I serve on the board of WISER (Women in Sustainable Energy and Resources), where I champion the advancement of women in our industry, and the Gould League, a trailblazing environmental education center. These opportunities allow me to drive impact, empower future leaders, and inspire innovative approaches to sustainability.”

Finding the right work-life balance
As a busy parent – and keen marathon runner! – Kathryn knows the juggle is real, but the flexible working policies at South32 have enabled her to meet all her commitments and thrive in her role.
“This company truly embraces the art of balance, offering flexibility and genuine understanding to support its people. Life is full of moving parts, but here, with the right blend of planning, energy, and motivation, everything aligns seamlessly. It’s a place where you can juggle life’s demands with confidence, knowing the support is real and the balance achievable.”
Taking time away from work to pursue personal goals alongside her professional ones means Kathryn feels she can bring her best self to work – and her hobbies have given her some amazing experiences.
“One of my proudest achievements is conquering a marathon in Antarctica—a breathtaking, icy adventure that perfectly captures my love for seeing what’s possible! I thrive on bold challenges, like the time I ran another marathon in full costume through the enchanting châteaux of Bordeaux, indulging in the region’s finest food and wine along the way. Adventure fuels me, and I’m always ready for the next extraordinary journey.”
Although Kathryn has been with South32 for just 18 months, she arrived with more than two decades of experience across the energy sector.
“I spent 20 years in international oil and gas with operators of iconic Australian developments in the North West Shelf and the Bass Strait, I’ve also worked in strategy consulting and regulatory oversight with the federal government. My career journey has evolved from technical engineering roles to leadership in governance, all underpinned by a strong focus on strategic vision and impactful stakeholder engagement. It’s a path that’s honed my ability to navigate complexity and drive meaningful outcomes”
Her combined industry skills have led her to her current role, overseeing and driving business performance and planning across all of South32’s global operations—in ten countries worldwide.
“My high-school self would be absolutely thrilled to see the future—a career as an engineer in heavy industry, breaking boundaries, and working globally with reach and impact. It’s a journey she couldn’t have dreamed of, but one I’m so proud to call my reality!”
With tailored graduate programs, career development pathways, mentoring, internships, secondments, and access to ongoing training, South32 takes the career progression of its employees seriously. As a lifelong learner, Kathryn shares that she’s about to embark on a significant milestone – a PhD in engineering.
Supporting women in mining
Kathryn wants to see the opportunities for women in mining and engineering continue to grow and to use her position to help others who wish to follow in her footsteps flourish in their careers.
“To me, success is about embracing positivity and empowering others to rise alongside you. I’m incredibly proud that South32 has partnered with WORK180, championing the advancement of women’s careers. It’s a powerful reminder that when we dream big, support each other, and take bold steps forward, there’s no limit to what we can achieve!”
