When we first meet Kristina Cubillejo, one thing is immediately clear – she’s driven by something bigger than a job title.

Having built a successful career in engineering, she is currently the Procurement Category Manager for Nufarm, a global crop protection and seed technologies company.

Nufarm‘s main goal to help farmers and businesses solve the critical need for sustainable food, feed, fibre and fuel production, is closely tied to Kristina’s purpose: to uplift others, create opportunity, and open doors for the next generation.

“My work plays a key role in supplying our innovative agricultural solutions across the region. But I didn’t reach this point overnight. It took a lot of hard work, resilience, and a dream worth chasing.”

We spoke with Kristina about what it takes to go against the grain (so to speak!), discover your purpose, find your feet as a leader, and support others along the way.

1. Daring to dream differently

In a quiet regional town in the Philippines, raised in a culture where early marriage was often seen as the ultimate milestone, Kristina dared to dream differently.

“From a young age, my late grandfather planted the idea of becoming an engineer in my mind, and with my family’s support, I made it my goal. After high school, many of my peers opted for marriage and family life. But I wanted to continue my studies so that I could create a better life for myself and my loved ones.”

She earned a government scholarship and began studying at university, but it wasn’t smooth sailing:

“Unfortunately, financial and performance pressures took their toll, and I missed out on the grades required to keep it. That could have been the end of my dream. But I wasn’t ready to give up. I returned to my university, applied for another scholarship tied to a working student program, and was successful.”

For the next five years, she worked six-hour shifts at the school’s busiest library and attended six hours of classes daily.

“It was tough. While others enjoyed carefree campus life, I was often studying through tears, watching my classmates relax while squeezing study time between shifts. But I was proud to secure my first high-paying job. It wasn’t just a personal achievement – it allowed me to support my siblings and help them pursue their dreams in life. That sense of purpose continues to drive me every day.”

In addition to supporting her siblings in achieving their higher education, she graduated with high honours, made the dean’s list, and earned her degree in industrial engineering.

2. Launching a career in procurement

After graduating, Kristina found her first role in the car-audio manufacturing industry, where her journey into procurement began, almost by accident.

“I applied for a role in a car-audio manufacturing company and was hired as a Sourcing Specialist. At first, I wasn’t sure if the role aligned with my background as an industrial engineer, so I reached out to one of my university professors for advice. He reassured me that the role was a great fit for my degree and an excellent starting point for my career.”

Looking back, this moment was a turning point, opening the door for her into a field she has since grown deeply passionate about. Kristina then took her next bold step, leaving the Philippines for Singapore and continuing her journey in the manufacturing industry.

3. Engineering a successful career

Over the next twenty years, Kristina built a distinguished career in procurement spanning a diverse range of global industries, including semiconductors, automotive, oil and gas, and chemicals.

Honing her skills in strategic sourcing, supplier management, contract negotiations, and global supply chain optimisation, she mastered her discipline and became a respected leader. Eventually, she discovered an opportunity with Nufarm that aligned with her values and experience, and now leads as a Procurement Category Manager.

“I’m deeply fulfilled by having an impact on the business by ensuring the right materials are sourced, at the right cost, and at the right time. I enjoy working closely with suppliers, navigating market complexities, and building collaborative relationships to bridge gaps and drive results.”

She loves that collaboration is a strength within the business, and there are always people willing to provide support.

“I particularly value cross-functional collaboration, especially with our R&D (Research and Development), Portfolio Solutions, and Quality teams, as we work together to diversify materials and develop sustainable solutions for Nufarm‘s business.”

Beyond Kristina’s core role, she takes pride in mentoring those around her, helping them grow and become stronger professionals, especially in the field of Procurement.

4. Leading with intention

Throughout her extensive career history, Kristina has led procurement teams across several industries, but one leadership principle has stayed with her:

“The principle that’s most important to me is authenticity. I believe in setting an example, walking the talk, and inspiring others through action. Being genuine and empathetic to others’ situations and emotions allows me to build trust, connect meaningfully, and support their growth.”

For her, leadership isn’t just about driving results—it’s about helping people become the best versions of themselves. This mindset isn’t just professional; it’s shaped by her personal connections with family and loved ones.

Using her income to send her younger siblings to university, she was deeply proud to see them graduate. One became an engineer like her, and the others built thriving IT careers.

“I felt like I’d fulfilled one of the biggest reasons for my existence, for my family. I also felt immense gratitude and pride for how my parents raised me to be someone who finds joy in helping others succeed. Seeing my siblings reach their goals reminded me that the sacrifices were worth it and continues to fuel my purpose today.”

5. Finding a new purpose

Admittedly, Kristina found her sense of purpose early on, helping her parents and supporting her siblings. But what happens when your sense of purpose feels fulfilled? It might be time to find a new one.

“I’ve discovered a brand new chapter, one where I nurture and love a family of my own. I’m incredibly blessed to have a loving, supportive home that keeps me grounded and inspired. My husband, CJ, has been my biggest supporter – even making sacrifices in his career so I could continue pursuing mine.”

Reflecting on the challenges she’s overcome, she remembers what pushed her forward.

“Even during tough times or setbacks, particularly balancing work and study, I never thought about giving up. The pressure was real, but my motivation to become the person I aspired to be carried more weight than any struggle I faced. That determination became my anchor, and it still guides me today.”

If you’re inspired to find a role like Kristina’s or want to join a supportive organisation like Nufarm, she offers a few words of guidance.

“Find your passion, lean into it, stay curious, and keep growing. Stay grateful, persevere and don’t give up. Solutions are always possible. And if you ever feel stuck, remember you’re not alone.”

It’s a mindset that’s served her well, and today, she’s found a workplace that reflects those same values.
